"I know what you we're gonna say But were afraid to cause dismay You're lyrics switched around The mixture watered down And now a pointless display" to me, this verse represents the record company saying SA needed to have less to do with the album (the market for 2003 was more for one band singers). as with other 311 songs, when it appears they're talking down to someone/something...half of the time they're referencing themselves. this song being one example.

Think about the video to this song... A bunch of people are just jumping around and going crazy. So, the first couple of comments are probably right.

Even though people hate to hear it, I still hear references to coke every time I listen to this song. It makes me think of going out and partying hard all weekend, then having to deal with the aftermath but doing it anyways. And I disagree that it's like boomers, they make you feel like you're sinking, not energetic. Acid, maybe.

ok. im a huge 311 fan but this is one of the songs that i really think could have 2 meanings. when i listen to it i can see it being about drugs, but then i can also see where it could be about being bipolar. i know people that arent fucked up can still be fucked up naturally and have some of the same effects happen to them similar to when a persons on drugs.

Dumbasses this song isn't about drugs or alcohol or masturbation" To me it seems like this is about someone with a Bipolar personality...it fits perfectly...Manic...Depression... If you'd prefer not to think about it in those terms, it doesn't have to labeled but it's someone with mood swings/split personality The first verse is about Manias "I'd surely like to rest but the energy gets the best of me" "I can't slow down inside" These are indications that he does not have control during the Manic state The second verse is about Depression "I land on earth's hard face, no legs could keep that pace" After the Manic state, one has no choice but to go into Depression...nobody can stay in the Manic state forever "I'm not used to it, you'd think I'd be by now The ins the outs the ups and the downs" He's not used to the mood swings even though he's had to deal with it for so long, they still always come so suddenly... The chourus is basically losing all control, these "creatures" take over and he can't control it, during this time he disregards all consequences and does whatever makes him feel better (make a mess, blow off stress, stoke the fire) but only for a while, later regret will come... "It's something one won't understand unless they're in it with me hand in hand" This suggests that he's been misunderstood a lot as people who don't go through similar things don't understand how someone can shift moods like that and lose control... Though it does say "Sometimes I go a little crazy just like you I do..." which makes it like everyone goes through it sometimes, well yeah everyone does, but not to the same degree Anyone who says this song is about alcohol or drugs obviously doesn't get it and can't relate, if you think alcohol and drugs are the only things that can make someone this way...some people actually are like it all the time and don't have real control over the mood swings...not saying you have to be bipolar to relate to this song, anyone who has had mood swings major or minor can but when it's like your life story then yeah...

i think this song is about going all out everyonce in awhile, and just let yourself go become a "creature". Nick has also said similar things in other songs like "take a moment to have a fit once in awhile" its just releving stress by letting it all out, but of course only (for awhile)

To me, this song is about getting stuck into a normal routine, and feeling the effects afterwardsof being a little too crazy. "the years of mischief, followed by weeks of thrift, I land on earth's hard face" but nonetheless, always wanting to get out and have a little fun... never wanting to sleep, wanting to life life to the fullest. . "for a while"

And how do you know it's about masturbation... But yes, it does sound like it's about bipolar disorder, because all the different verses of the song seem to deal with a different aspect of it. It also sounds like it could be about someone on some kind of drug, like meth, because he says "I'd surely like to rest but the energy gets the best of me". It's like, when you're on a drug like meth, you can sometimes stay awake for a whole week at a time. Then later, after the high, you crash and feel disgustingly horrible, and you have to deal with all the consequences of what you did because of the drugs. It could also be how, when you're on a drug, you are often in such a happy state that at the time you think it's the best thing ever. Hence the "I wouldn't change a minute". Just my 2 cents.

This was the song that really turned me into a 311 fan. I agree that it is about just getting out and having some fun every so often (God knows I don't do enough of that) but has anyone picked up on the eerie parallel it has to masturbation. Seriously! Just take a good look at the chorus. Not saying that the song is about that but damn...weird. Remember kids, mastubration doesn't screw with your eyes. It just screws yourself.
