i think its about a girl with a screwed up life, shes not doing this pleasure shes just doing this cause she can. A drunk raped and killed her, he has a little girl at home and thinks of that little girl and is scared that it could've been his daughter. He has all this pain bottled up inside of him and he won't let it happen again. So he throws the whiskey and throwws the gun.(His dad was a drunk pervert)As he cries out to the heavens"i am not my father's son"

i think it's even more than that. see, the man goes to the prostitute and pretty much has it the way he wants it. - "don't try to scream now, but i want this one to hurt...i'm gonna get my money's worth" then, a month later, he's at a bar looking back and he's realizing what he did, how much he hurt her and everything, and he starts to think that it could have been *his* daughter in the same situation as the prostitute. "it's been a month since he saw her face underneath that bloodstained gown...he wonders what if that was my little girl" then, during another drinking binge, he starts to consider himself an evil person for what he did to the girl. so he grabs a bottle of whiskey and a gun and heads outside to end his life so it never happens again. "either way, my soul is gone. and i'll end this all tonight" i also have to imagine that the "i am not my father's son" probably implies that the man's father may have been physically abusive towards his mother, since the whole thing is based upon what could be perceived as an act of violence against a prostitute. i think the chorus just reiterates the feelings of remorse that the man has towards what he did; but i also think it's very cleverly constructed in that, initially, i think it means that he never wants to do that again and then it progresses to mean that he'll never do it again because he's dead. that's just my interpretation. let me know if your opinion differs. oh and the actual lyrics for the third line are "the damned walked in beside her", not "the man walked in beside her".

"As he cries out to the heavens I am not my father’s son" I thought that meant he was saying to the heavens that he is not a worthy person or something. Like he isn't God's son.

this song has all ready been spoken for... it is a young girl that he has sex with first time... bloodstained gown.... and he's married and has a daughter and wonders about her.. he thinks about killing himself, but stops because that is what his dad did in this situation.

I have to agree with those that think this song is a murder, but the way it struck me when I first heard it (this may be a result of too much CSI and Law and Order: SVU) was that she was a young prostitute who was murdered, and he was the policeman responsible for catching the guy. Obviously, he sees his daughter in this young girl, and is terrified of the idea. The line "What if that was my little girl, walking down that road alone" says to me that he's afraid his little girl could go down that road (life path, not literal road) and he feels for the dead girl's parents. He drinks because he can't catch the guy and feels like he let his daughter down because of it, even though he didn't. The pain gets so intense that he considers killing himself to end it, but in the end throws both the alcohol (his crutch) and the gun away and "cries out to the heavens, I am not my father's son!", indicating to me that he will not succumb to weakness like his father did, which could mean his father was an alcoholic or an abuser or anything like that. Just a thought, it's what came to me when I listened to the song.

"And tonight my pretty one / I'm gonna get my money's worth" First off all i think it isn't the first time. I think that he spend money in the prostitute more than once, until one night he beet her! I think he take a degraded live, mostly because of his father. So the blood is literal blood, he beet her!!! And I think he's seeing himself doing the same mistakes that his father did. So he decide to kill himself. But in that night he saw himself as a perfect reflection of is dad, and throws the gun, and the whiskey. He do not kill himself, and apparently decide to stop drinking. He decide that he's not his "father's son". He don't want to walk the same path. The "pain" of the past, starts to be a fear that he will become just as he's father, and now he's afraid, that his little daughter become just as that prostitute. He's afraid of push his daughter to that live, as his father did with him. That's why he don't kill himself! Other thing, i think the girl his the one with 17's. That's why he make an compare to his daughter. Great Song!!! ( and lots of greats interceptions )

I think taltos has it right. The only thing I would add is that when I hear "bloodstained gown" I think it means he killed the prostitute after having his way with her. That is why it tears him up so much inside, not that he just paid her for sex but that he killed her afterwards.

"I am not my father's son" in my opinion tells me that the man who f8cked the prostitute knows that he has brought shame to his family's name, and he is trying to disown himself and/or his parents act like they don't know him. ~Fledgehog

I agree with everyone else but when I think about the Father's Son part I think of God. He's a sinner and he's done such a bad thing that he's not God's son anymore. "Maybe I’m just crazy or the devil got inside But either way my soul is gone, I’ve learned this all night The one hand throws the whiskey, and the other throws the gun As he cries out to the heavens I am not my father’s son" He's crying out to God that he's a sinner and he isn't his son... Hell, I don't know. Just a thought.

I think that the reason he drinks is because he wants to forget what he did because it was so bad. He's probubly a really nice kid who was put up to it by his friends, to have sex. It got to rough and the prostitute got killed. His father probubly was a murderur and The kid doesn't want to be assosiated with his father, but he finds himself straying down that path.

Righty then. i love this song. tbh i think its bout some kid who paid a prostitute and wanted it to hurt, but ended up killing her. then a month on he was still living with the regret 'chokes that bottle down' hes tryin to forget wat he did. then that night hes sayin he cld end it, but its wat his father did but if he did his daughter would be walkin down that road alone which also gives me the impression that the prostitute had no father. but thats not important. hes claiming hes not his fathers son because maybe his father killed his mother and is refusing himself to be following in his footsteps. or his father was an honest man and hes sayin hes nothing like him, tho he wish he cld be. correct me if i wrong. but damn, wat a waste of whiskey

Okie In My Opinion, Taltos Got the closest. I Think that the song is about a boy who goes to a prostitute because he doesn't have any1 to control him, to look after him"Didn't know things...17 year old" and a few years later hes a jobles, married father pretty much like his own dad was. He's speaking in his own perspective and he basically thinks back to that day when he had sex with the prostitute. The "Blood Stined Gown" In my opinion represents the pain that his family's goin through cuz the head(the father) is missing. He realizes that this is exactly what his father did to him and that if he doesn't "End This all tonight" his daughters gonna suffer as well. These lyrics don't mean that hes gonna kill himself, it jus means hes gonna turn over a new leaf and that hes gonna stop drinkin smoking cuz remember he throws that gun and throws that bottle, not uses the trigger on himself. And then basically he screams to the heavens and tell his prbably dead father that "I'm Not gonna do what u did to me" and he walks of home to his family. So there thats what i feel this song is about ;)

Another idea- he could be suffering for one of his father's actions, or he hates his father for some reason (o no duh). Maybe his father put him up to something, and it winded up in something he regreted. Or maybe he killed his father. then started getting into the world of sex and beer. I feel bad for this kid.

after reading what you all said, this is what _I_ think the song means: this guy is an alcoholic heading for disaster and he is always sleeping with prostitutes, then after this one night he beats and/or kills one of the girls. a month later he's drinking again and thinking about what he did and he feels horrible because of it so he decides to kill himself, but right before he does he thinks about his father, who (once again, this is just my opinion) I think commited suicide due to the hard things in life (maybe during the guy's childhood), and wrecked his son's (our guy's) life because of it. he realizes that if he kills himself now his daughter's gonna grow up like he did, fatherless and she might end up an alcoholic, or a prostitute, or both, and end up getting hurt by one of her "customers". so he tosses the whiskey and the gun and decides he won't follow his father's footprints, and he decides to change his life and his ways. ITS SUCH A HAPPY ENDING *tear* 1

it seems like its deeper than him just bein ashamed. bcuz ok, it starts off with him goin to the prostitute and having his way with her and finally realizes that what he did was wrong and thinks of his own daughter and in the end, gets drunk and then kills himself "The one hand throws the whiskey, and the other throws the gun" because hes turned out like his father and doesn't want it to be that way...if anybody thinks diferent, fill me in please....thanx

I also think that the dude in this is feeling realy bad about what he did. I also think that his father did something bad, and that maybe someone knew or something, but rather than accepting something, weather his son, or respnsibility, he shot himself. Just to toss an idea around, could this kid be a raepist? or a murderur? (2 much SVU probubly)(and not enough spelling)

I say this guy isnt a young man or a kid, I say he's about middle aged, maybe he's divorced or his wife died. So anyway, he has his way with the prostitute and now he is feeling bad because he thinking about the daughter he has at home going down that path. And I also say that his father was a good man and when he says " I am not my father's son" he is saying that I am not who my father raised me to be.
