| Ryan Adams, from an interview with Pitchforkmedia: ...when I wrote the record Gold, I was trying to close a chapter in my life, on who I was, a relationship that I'd been very possessed by and obsessed with. I was trying to find a musical way of closing doors, so that new ones could open. But after that record, 9/11 happened. And then everybody looks back at that song-- where I'm trying to say to this girl, whatever... Pitchfork: "New York, New York"? Adams: Yeah. Where we had a run, but OK, it didn't work. And in some weird way that song was almost like that Bon Jovi song, you know (sings), "Better to have loved and lost..." Basically saying that same thing, but people attached this meaning to it. Recently somebody sent me a funny e-mail they'd gotten where this guy wrote, "It's bad enough that this guy, like, totally calls himself Ryan Adams, so that he can get Bryan Adams' fans, but like, he's still playing that 9/11 anthem?" And I was like, that's the best e-mail I've ever seen! But you know what I mean? That song, for some people, changed. It didn't change for me. http://pitchforkmedia.com/interviews/a/adams_ryan-05/ | |

| It is an excellent song.....sometimes people forget to return your love, but the city you grew up in never will New York, for its citizens, is a mother.....and this song reflects that. | |

| This song is awesome. Fantastic opening track to a fantastic album. 'I remember christmas in the blistering cold, in a church on the upper west side, Babe i stood there singing, i was holding your arm you were holding my trust like a child' Genius | |

| It works on so many levels. Perfect song about living in the city. It might chew you up a bit, but it'll never spit you out. And in between, there are some real moments to experience that are so worth it. Perfect song to commemorate September 11th. Even with all glitz and greed of New York City, the good people still out number the bad. This song recognizes New York for what it is, and decides it's still pretty cool. It doesn't have to be solemn to be emotional. And on a personal note, the perfect song to remember a new york city girl by. This girl was a complete bitch to me, but I waited on her, hand and foot. Eventually it ended (on the 4th of july, coincidently) and I still don't feel too angry towards her. I can appreciate the real moments we had together. Simply beautiful. | |

| Great song, very cheery. I think "rocket" in the third line is supposed to be "robber" though. It just makes more sense that a robber would run to Mexico, than a rocket would do the same, right? | |

| yeah, you'd think that... he seems to sing about rockets a lot though. i love this song, but I must say that every time i listen to it, the verses make me think of "walk this way" by Aerosmith (yeah, i know, that's weird and terrible. but stop. think about it.... | |

| Ok this song really has no direct meaning to New York City itself, it is more along the lines of a girl Ryan loved and how he is just remebering and looking back on the times he spent with her and how beautiful she was. | |

| I think this is a fantastic rock n' roll song - I first heard it a week after Sept. 11th, when the video was played in tribute. It was filmed 4 days before the attacks, and the WTC is in the background. But as for the lyrics, I think they're great - I love the line about "a picture that would fit in the folds of my wallet", but I couldn't say why.. | |
