Riff over 2nd half of 2nd chorus:

Break:

--------8-----------8-------------8------------8----------------8-----------8-------8-------7-------
9-----------9-----------9-------------9------------9-------7-------7---7-------7-------7-------7---7

-----------------------------------------------
---10-------7------------7----------7----------
---------7-------7---7-------7--7-------7------

-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------

Riff #2 begins with vocals on 2nd half of clean tone part:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------8---7---------8--8--8--8--8---10--10--10---7--7--7--7-7--------------
---9-------------9----9--9--9--9--9----9---9---9----7--7--7--7-7-------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

End: This part is kind of tricky, the chords in parentheses are arpeggiated
(for those of you not familiar with this, it requires strumming through the
notes individually and quickly in a smooth motion). Also, all the chords
that are only open strings are played with upstrokes, this is important to
get the right rhythm and feel of the part.

---x---x------------------------------------------------------------------------3-------------------
---x---x------------x---x---x---x----(x)---x--------(x)---x-------x---x----3------------------------
---x---x---x-------x---x---x---x----(4)--------4---(2)--------2---x---x---4---4---7---9---11--------

---2----------------------------------------------------------------------------5---5---5---7----9--
---x----------------------------------------------------------------------------3---3---------------

2nd time through is the same but at the end this progression replaces the ascending octave
chords
---5----------------------------------------------------
---7----------------------------------------------------
---7----x-----------------------------------------------
---7----4-----then slide down into next phrase----------
---5----5-----------------------------------------------
---5----------------------------------------------------

The final time through this progression, end with this chord:

----7----
----7----
----8----
----9----
----9----
----7----

2nd part of End:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------3------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------3------------------
---x---x---x-------------------------x---x---x-------------------------------4----2--2-------------
---2---2---2----12---12slide11---2---2---2----11--11slide14---12-----5---4---7---------------------
---2---2---2-------------------------2---2---2-------------------------------5----5---5------------
---x---x---x----10---10slide9-----x---x---x----9----9slide12----10----3----2---2-------------------

The only difference in the 4 measure of the end are the changes in the octave chord progression,

which I'm sure you can hear, and they are:

---------------------
---------------------
----7---7slide9------
---------------------
----5---5slide7------
---------------------

-----------------------
----8---8slide10-------
-----------------------
-----------------------
----7---7slide9--------
-----------------------

I love this song! How does Davey write such beautiful lyrics? Anyway, does anyone know what he says in the background near the end of the second chorus?

A friend of mine told me to listen to that. Apparently he has great taste in music. I've never even heard of AFI before a few weeks ago and now they're one of my favroite bands. This, in my opinion, is one f their best songs. I hope they can keep creating more like this one.

If anyone noticed that part where he states "My whole life is a dark room... One big dark room." was taken from the movie Beetle Juice. The daughter, Lydia, says it to her parents.

i never really thought of this song as a love song really...ok like the first verse-its saying that hes by himself and hes just walking around thinking and wasting his life away not knowing what to do-and the stairs part-i dunno but i thought of it as hes waiting by the stairs of heaven but hell never go up them....and the second verse is just him walking by himself and hes like the last person on earth or sumthin and hes been like this for a long time-i dunno but if you read the lyrics enough youll notice the loneliness described by davey-and hes by himself and its just so sad-btw this song is the best! my fav part is when theres the voice in the backround right before the slow part-and the part riht before the chourse starts up and he says own-its cool...this songs the best! 1 2 Next

I think this song means u are in hopeless denial that a person will return to u, kindove like dreaming of someone and waking up to reality finding that u r still all alone "do i hear the hollow sound, footseps residing on this frozen ground or the familiar disapointments of the echoes of my own" u r still waiting for this person even though u know that they will never return to u "waiting by the stairs, waiting i despair" and so u end up in this sort of melancholic sadness that u fear u will never recover, but there is always comfort in knowing youll never be seen "somehow i ended up here in between, were there is always the comfort of knowing ill never be seen, when i fall" and in the end all u want to do is wait for that person no matter if they will return to u or not "I wait for just one touch and I fall Weightless, endless. Faithless, I'll adore you. A single touch before I fade" youve seen this all before and misery is so familiar to u that u take comfort in it "my whole life is a dark room, one big dark room" either way this song is simply beautiful. Painless let me pass through

I may be wrong, but I thought that the correct lyrics was "My life is a dark realm, one....big....dark....realm" in reference to Beetlejuice when Wynona Rider's character is attempting to write a suicide note in the movie and keeps trashing them after the first sentence because she thinks it sucks. In that movie as she is writing, you hear her voice-over as if shes saying it in her head, she says "My life is a dark realm....one....big....dark.....realm". It may be a HUGE coincidence, or I might be a complete retard. Watch Beetlejuice. You decide.

This song... Is truely great, it explains the ordeals of a person, going through a pretty rough period in time, which would explain... "My whole life is a dark room... One BIG dark room." this lyric is almost suggesting the person was left out in the dark, as if to rot and die. Awesome song, either way.

It seems like one of those old sad love story movies. Kind of like the movie "Sleepy Hollow" but in black and white. Where it is suppose to be the best day of his life and the girl never shows up (like that). It seems like when he says "steal away the breath and leave me on my own." Is when he realizes that girl will never show up. Or maybe never cared.

ya thats right Beetle Jucie is one green sunvabitch. except he's dead, i.e. "YEEHOO, huh huh huh YEEHOO, I'l possess myself if i gotta! WOah i got demons runnin aaall through me, aaalll through me" That film is so good, and yeah Afina i used to watch it all the time when i was a kid too. Can this thing be about beetle juice now and not the song? oh right ok, the song totally rules, and Davey's lyrics are amazing, especialy the line that starts with "Do I hear the hollow sound..." this isnt even one of the best on the album i dont think but it god DAMMIT it rules!! But it does mention Beetle GEUSE so maybe its getting better. christ its good, the best is obviously the lost souls though. and OGAG. Tiger Army also rule, if you like AFI then you love them too

I like the theory that this song is about pergatory. It seems to fit pretty well. And why in every board here I at least see one person say "who cares about the meaning". Look at the name of the site. songmeanings.ent. Anyways, i've been a fan of AFI for awhile and this is definitely one of my fav songs.

i think this song is about pergatory, and being in between heaven and hell. Davey is "waiting by the stairs" to heaven, but he is alone, and he is afraid he will never get into heaven. " Do I hear the hollow sound, footsteps resounding on this frozen ground, or the familiar disappointment of the echoes of my own?" he thinks someone has come for him, and he is not alone, but he realizes it was just his own footsteps, and he has felt this way many times before. "there is always the comfort of knowing i'll never be seen when i fall" he knows that if he falls into hell, no one will see him. "i wait for just one touch. and i fall weightless, endless, faithless" he eventually loses his faith in god and himself, and he fades away, longing to just once feel the touch of heaven before he falls.

I love when the music stops and he goes "One...big...dark....room" I think this song is about someone whoe feels totally alone, and they walk throught he woods by themselves where they can reflect on themself. This is oneof the greatest AFI songs ever. I wish I knew what he said near the end of the second chorus, it soudns great though.

i think this song is about someone very dear to you who gets pushed away from you either by something terrible you did or by something that happened between you. all you can do is wait and hope for this person to come back and forgive you, but everytime they seem near, they are even farther away. At this point you are completely alone; all you want is to see this person again, just one more touch. all you can do now is try to make it through with as little pain as possible.
