| The Title has nothing to do with the song... Now that I think about it, a lot of AFI songs (almost all of them) have titles that don't make sense... Ex: ...But Home is Nowhere, The Interview, Wester, Porphyria Cutanea Tarda, just a few that came to mind... 1 | |

| This song is about realizing that you are better than those you idolize. 2 years ago a girl I idolized hurt me so I know the pain, and the anger. I recognized some of the signs. "Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain. The hungry eyes waiting for life flash, now they're gonna see it." This is saying 'you hurt me so now I will hurt you, the ones who always wanted to see you fall will see me take my revenge' "Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain. Let's strip you down so we can see your old scars. Now you're gonna feel it." Translation: 'I hate you and if I chose to hurt you no one would care anymore because they all hate you too.' "Show me how to shine now." This is like mocking the ex-idol because I looked up to her to 'show me how to shine' but now I have lost all respect for her. My favorite part, the chorus: "Have you ever turned to dust?" Translation: Have you ever been brought as low as you brought me? " I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned." Translation: I have grown and changed so much, but because you have broken me, I will never be the same again. "Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty." Translation: People are the way they are because of how their lives are. People with similar problems stick together. "Have you lost the sense of touch? Have you ever turned to dust?" Translation: How can you treat people like you do? and again, Has anyone ever brought you this low? people sometimes think that it's okay to treat someone badly because they are of a different religion, race, or social class. IT'S NOT. People ARE affected by the actions of others. "Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl." Translation: It's pretty clear. You figure out your idol is not immortal, and with this new knowledge, you get revenge on them for decieving you. "The lack of loyalty you thought you once felt, now you're gonna feel it. Now show me how to shine." Translation: This is about someone who was of a high social class, but they still complained, then they fell to the class which they had discriminated against before, and no one wanted to be their friend. It ends with "Now show me how to shine" saying 'ha ha you thought you were so special now you're just like us and no one likes you.' | |

| I don't know if anyone else feels the same way about the song as I do. There are several other possible meanings above my post. "Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain. The hungry eyes waiting for life flash, now they're gonna see it. Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain. Let's strip you down so we can see you old scars. Now you're gonna feel it." This part sounds to me like it's supposed to be from a group of tormentors' point of view, almost as if Davey is imitating them in an exaggerated way to expose their cruelty. "Show me how to shine now. Have you ever turned to dust? I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty. Have you lost the sense of touch? Have you ever turned to dust?" This part seems to switch back to Davey's (or possibly a separate narrator's) point of view. The line "show me how to shine now" is asking for someone to help him recover from the brutality. The insect part is symbolic of an innocent person, perhaps "coming out of their shell" or, in the song, "learning to fly." However, the person is beaten down by his/her peers ("it's form was scorned) and made into (or possibly BACK into) an outcast or loner. the "kingdom of the flys" is the group of tormentors. Their cruelty is implied by the use of flys, an insect generally thought of as dirty (and a possible reference to Lord of the Flies?). The line "have you lost the sense of touch" is Davey asking the "flies" how they can stand to do what they do to people. "Have you ever turned to dust?" is another question directed to the "flies," asking them if they have ever collapsed or been destroyed by behavior similar to their own, asking them to put themselves in their victims' shoes. The final part of the song switched back to the "flies," who are mocking Davey. "Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you'll fall" implies that the "learnign to fly" was a setup by the "flies" for their own amusement. I may be completely wrong about the song's meaning, but I've always seen it like that. | |

| Insects molt, so in order to fly one has to shed it's form, thus it being scorned. Which then makes it seem like an allusion to him "shedding" a past item (like a girl, or even better... their old guitarist Mark?) and being scorned in the process. As for the rest of the song, it's obviously just malice, I beleive it could be simply an anthem of Davey's feelings against Mark, along with Lower It. And asking him to show him how to shine is like thinking once Mark left "now what do I do? Tell me how we're to recover from THAT" | |

| You see this is what makes this song special to me: I interpret Davey to have fucked with a couple of bugs in his life......sota like ripping their wings off and such. Well in this song....Davey is watching the bugs get back!!! Also it says about "Show me how to shine now" So maybe it was a lighning bug. Anyway....davey observes the blodbath ensuing ;-) and even shows compassion for them Good For The Bugs :-) Ps. I am not on drugs.....High on life :-D | |

| Intense anger in this one! I think it centers around what is expected of him from manangers, fans, friends, etc. etc. He dramatically represented the pain felt by expectations and how they were perceived. It all focuses on disappointment & realizing what is feasible and what isn't. The insect is a metaphore for himself. | |

| There's a lot of pain and anger expressed in these lyrics. The first part seems to be about Davey talking to someone, calling that person selfish for trying to hurt themselves just for attention. The fly whose "form was scorned" when it was learning to fly probably meant that it was doing it wrong right from the start and that it could never learn how to fly because of this. The last parts of the song seems to express how that person thought everyone was against her or him and therefore, made it come true in the end. Sorry just my little interpretation. Love the song, though. | |

| I'd take the above but apply it to a person. As for the insects....dig deeper into their other songs.... Davey in a number of songs has refered to normal people as insects (see The Last Kiss and the poem between ...But Home is Nowhere and This Time Immperfect on STS). The Last Kiss is about some one who betrayed them self and changed who they were for other people and lost controll of what they were doing to him (I cant stop the insects that are feeding). So perhaps these are the same insects in this song-that the narrorator is talking about a person that was taken and changed by these 'insects' into something the person was not, perhaps in doing so becomeing an insect as well. So in the first verse the narrorator is erging the person to resist the insects, to remain who they are, even if others dont like it, yet the person gives in and joins the 'kingdom of the flys' (flys being insects ofcourse). Feeling betrayed the narrorator grows bitter and adopts a fuck you attitude, saying ' Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl.' or that fine, go become one of them, but in the end you'll fall and become nothing (dust?) again. | |

| Everything makes pretty good sense if you think of it as a song about gettting famous. Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain: Lets see if anybody likes your music or your style or whatever. The hungry eyes waiting for life flash, now they're gonna see it: Everybody is waiting for them to do something amazing because that is whats expected of them. Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain: pretty much the same as the 1 first line. Lets see if people like what you've got to give. Let's strip you down so we can see you old scars: Lets find out more about you, because now that your famous its become interesting. Have you ever turned to dust: Have you ever felt this way? I saw an insect learn to fly: The insect is him trying to become good at making music or singing or whatever. Its form was scorned: People did not like what he was, or what kind of band afi was, while they were trying to get a record deal, or become a good band. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys: Have you ever seen others like us? I saw them stay in sovereignty: He saw the other bands who where better. Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall: From the beginning, everybody just wanted them to do something stupid so that they could laugh and feel better than them. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl: Their fans comment on something stupid they've done or how somehow they screwed up and expecting more of them. The lack of loyalty you thought you once felt, now you're gonna feel it: They once thougght no one had ever cared about them, but now they are gonna see how many do now. I dont really know and im only 11 so you cant make fun of me or your an evil person, but this is what i think its about. | |

| This song isn't one of my favorites on the album, it is still pretty good though, I think there is definately some bitterness in the lyrics and the music. The seeing an inscet learn to fly thing doesn't make too much sense to me but for some reason it seems like, seeing an insect learn to fly is something that is never really meant for human eyes....it is a basic instinct that is necessary for survival, however, I know that birds learn to fly by falling, and they either have to start flying before they hit the ground or they die...so maybe it is possible to see an insect learn to fly, and it could be a once in a lifetime experience...anyway, I don't know what that has to do witht he song, but that's what the insect makes me think of. | |

| this song is hard to explain and intrepret. "I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty" not many people pay much attention to flys, but he took the time to whatch it learn to fly, he also looked at the kingdom, that insect stayed in rule. of what? "Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl" put the insect thing and this togther you could say he's not talking about insects at all. something that was scorned, stayed in rule. iam sure you hear of fallen angels. and intresting thing is after Satan decived man in the Garden, God told Satan that he would be forced to crawl ("now you'll crawl") on his belly and eat the dust (have you ever turned to dust?) "Now show me how to shine" Satan shined and Davey whants to know how. "The lack of loyalty you thought you once felt, now you're gonna feel it" Satan probly felt betrayed because things didn't work out how he whanted to. and now Davey demanding to know how to shine is going to acheive (wishfull thinking mabey?) what Satan did not. and by the way i think that none of AFI's songs are about love because in the song "smile" he says "i'll light the world on fire, and in the burning light i'll write my first love song." well the world ain't burning yet, nor are his followers many enough to make light with the fire inside them. | |

| This is a quite intresting song due to the way it is written. It probaly talking about his fustrations in relationships (a girl i presume). He probaly got hurt really bad and left him this emotion-less for a while. Now a little later he feels that revenge or hatred towards this person will bring out their "true self." I mean by saying their "old scares." This song can pertain to really anyone like a bitter eX relationship. Maybe even a bitter dispute with his parents. I need to do more research on other songs from AFI. Cya! | |

| I think it`s very easy to point out that a person (probably Davie himself) is focusing in on another person and just the way they are as a person and that person is either someone he is not or hasn`t seen the light of day when it comes to real emotions, or being himself and letting everyone know who he really is. 'Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain' - Basically saying let`s let everyone know how your heart really feels and see if anyone accepts you for that. 'Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain' - Also saying the same thing but not fixating on the heart as the heart refers to feelings. | |
