	This song is about his search for faith. The first verse is about how Davey always searched for, but could never find angels (a metaphor for religion), and later in the song he realizes that he has been lied to for all these years. He always wanted to believe, but can't bring himself to believe in something so false. I relate to this song so well. It's beautiful and tells my life story. XXX

	I think this song is about waiting around for something that is perfect and it (obviously) not ever coming around. Be it a person, a thing, a feeling, what have you. It's about finding perfection and not getting it. The speaker is waiting patiently and keeps thinking whatever he's seeking will come, but it never does, and he ends up wasting away while waiting for it. That's the begining anyway. Then he starts to realize he's been decieved, realizing all the promises were lies. "So dies all innocence"... he feels spoiled and jaded, no longer innocent and expectant of whatever the desired object was. Just my take on it.

	can remember a place I used to go Chrysanthemums of white, they seemed so beautiful I can remember, I searched for the amaranth I'd shut my eyes... to see * This verse is about the beginning of the relationship (e.g. Love) and how everything was beautiful and perfect. The amaranth being just a metaphor for love, it being an eternal flower that never fades. Although sadly it doesn't exist, thus foreshadowing the end of the song... Oh, how I smiled then, so near the cherished ones I knew they would appear... saw not a single one Oh, how I smiled then, waiting so patiently I'd make a wish... and bleed * Ah ignorance is bliss is it not? Here they were happy because they felt they had found love, and just had to wait for it to blossom. When you love someone you trust them, thus they knew that it would appear eventually, but it didn't. This is the beginning of the pain, when they start to realize that what they think is love doesn't seem to be going as they expected... While I waited I was wasting away While I waited I was wasting away * Time passes and they begin fading away. I suppose being in love and not having it returned in kind would do that to you. "How could I have become?" could possible be referring to them now being lost and confused, questioning who they are. I never, never wanted this I always wanted to believe I never, never wanted this I never, never wanted this But from the start I'd been deceived I never, never wanted this * See previous statement Inside a crumbling effigy But you promised So dies all innocence But you promised me * The crumbling effigy is their life, the promise is the one of love, and now the innocence that they once had is lost and they truly realize the lie for what it is. The promise is of the one of love that was never true. While I waited I was wasting away While I waited I was wasting away While I waited I was wasting away Hope was wasting away Faith was wasting away I was wasting away * See a few statements above. All in all a rather sad song, essentially about being lied to either in love or possibly something else. I know people seem to be keying in on the word faith here and thinking it has religious meaning. Just like someone else I think said, assuming it's a religious reference may be taking it too literally. I mean I have faith that when I goto bed tonight I'll wake up tomorrow, there is definitely nothing religious about that. My take is that faith in the context of this song is just about love in general. If you fall deeply in love with someone then realize that that love was a lie, that could quite possibly damage your faith in love altogether. The sad thing is you'd then be letting someone who apparently deceived you from the start (i.e. a BAD person), ruin not only your life (thus crumbling effigy) but also your hope of real love. :( Guess that's pretty much it, feel free to comment and let me know what you think. This was just a quick assessment of the song, so I might be a bit off on some points. :) Ringwraith

	I've had enough of the interpretations where everyone thinks Davey is talking about a girl or its about some relationship...his lyrics are almost never about this...if you can relate to a song thinknig it's about a relationship, go right ahead, but it's not what Davey intended. This song is obviously about death and the promise of an eternal heaven. EVERY line in the song proves this idea. To be a little more specific, I think Davey has 'died.' After his death he expects to be embraced by angels of heaven but nothing happens. Then he talks about how he had dreamed about what it was like, but it ended up all being a lie.

	Ok so far these religion themes have been pretty farfetched in opinion. I mean you guys are being very selective in the lyric lines you are quoting: quoting only the ones that fit predetermined meaning of the song without considering other possibilities. Ok I'm being a big fucking dick, but I just had to put that forward. Let's be objective and honest here. Honestly this song can mean whatever the hell you want it to be, thats the beauty of Davey Havok's songwriting: its deliberately vague, making it open to interpretation. The religion interpretation is still far fetched in my opinion, but then again, its only my opinion.

	Ok...yeah I thought this song was about religion too...searching for faith, but not being able to find it. I don't think that the religious interpretations are "farfetched". Yeah, a lot of people try to make every song about religion, but this is basically the only AFI song that made me think about religion right away. I'm not being closeminded in any way. It might not have to do with religion, but I think that the religious interpretations make a lot of sense and fit this song very well.
