it's about religion .. religion is something AFI talks about a lot. many of the things in this song mock the religion of christianity. "If you can't stand upon the water I will see you on the ocean floor", mocking Jesus Christ who stood upon water, davey explains that if he can't stand upon water, we'll see him drown. "Come to me, your sanctuary", Church .. the sanctuary of GOD. People often refer to Christianity as the right and perfect relgion ... "Look what you've done to me now, you've made me perfect, look what you've done to me now..", If you study Christianity, you've become perfect. I beleive this song is about how just religion in general is a dumb idea, and that don't beleive stories you've read in a stupid book (the bible), lead your own life and think for yourself. I don't mean to shit on anyones religion, so if i did, i'm sorry .. this is my opinon on the song.

I think that this song is more about convincing someone that they should be with you. "If you can't stand upon the water I will see you on the ocean floor. When you blink do you only find the misery between the lines? Then take my hand and walk with me. Come to me, your sanctuary, Then take my hand and walk with me." - I find this to mean that he will be there for them whenever they need. "Then take my hand and walk with me. Come to me, your sanctuary, I'll gladly accept the gift that I've been granted." - Come be with me. I'm willing to protect you. "f you feel fine, then give it just a little time I'm sure you'll contract my disease." - Give me a chance and you will feel the same way about me as i do about you. "Look what you've done to me now, you've made me perfect." - This refers to the way that you always try to be your best when the one you love is around. "If you can't stand upon the earth then I will meet you on the other side" - I will be there for you. "Then take my hand and sleep with me." - Come be with me. "Take my hand I'll be everything to you. Take my hand I'll take everything from you. I will seep under your skin. I will. I will hold onto your heart. I will." - This talks about sharing thier love with one another.

That and the trust you have for this person as a person, lover and friend, right? From all the different perspectives this person is viewed, the one that matters is the one that conveys the deepest love and affection. Nothing can take it away from them.

Well thisis one of my lesser favorites on TAOD, but it is still a great song, and I think that theory that Ilike the most is the one about not finding faith in religion, since it seems like a lot of the lyrics point that way.

this is a great song live, jade does this little intro extra part when they play it live, and when the drums go fast near the begining, Davey jumps into the crowd

Religion is a major motif for AFI. This song at first seems to be almost mocking Christianity, but the way i see it, it is, while not a Christian song, quite affirming to the faith. He (maybe Jesus) Says that he can be sanctuary and help to ease the pain. He gladly accepts the gift (absolving of sins), but also laments "Look what you've done to me now, you've made me perfect," which could refer to th crusification. I dunno, and i'm not saying this is a "god song," but that is kinda the way i see it.

Personally to me this song is not mocking chritianity at all. I dont know if Davey is for religion or against it but he seems to write alot of songs portreying religion."If you cant stand upon the water, i`ll see you on the ocean floor" this means that he(god) will be with you always until the end. "When you blink do you only find the misery between the lines? Then take my hand and walk with me." this means that if your only find misery in your life then you should join god and walk with him. "I'll gladly accept the gift that I've been granted. If you feel fine, give it just a little time, I'm sure you'll contract my disease." This is saying that god will gladly accept the greatness and responsibility that people potrey him to have. the "If you feel fine" part means that if you have nothign to worry about now then in awhile you will start caring about other people and other things and that is his disease, caring about the people who dont necissarily care about him. The chorus is saying that the way god is portreyed it makes him look like hes perfect just through the bible. The second verse of the song is much like the first one. Take my hand, I'll be everything to you, Take my hand, I'll take everything from you, I will seep under your skin, I will, I will hold onto your heart, I will. This means that if you beleive in god that he`ll mean everythign to you but it also means that god can take away your life at any moment. he will get into you and infect you and hold onto your heart and not let go. I am not some christian bible bashing dickhead but i do beleive that this is what the song is about, but this is just my opinion and the way u interpret it is your own choice. 1 2 3 Next

I actually thought of this song to be about a person who's only going out with another because of pity, but then loses interest because of how horrible they really were.. But I can see the christianity thing now. Maybe my low self-esteem is making me lose my train of thought.. Its a good song though.

Agreed that religions is a recurring theme behind many AFI songs, but I see the song a different way. I see this song as a cry from one who finds no comfort in religion or faith. "If you can't stand upon the water I will see you on the ocean floor". To me thats kind of like saying, if you can'y see Jesus as divine or whatever if you can't see the miracle of faith then you are doomed, in this case drowning. Also the line, "If you feel fine, give it just a little time Im sure youll contract my disase". Here, I think he is saying that even if you are comfortable in your faith if you actually take the time to question your beliefs you will find less comfort in them and become lost. I think lyrically this is my favorite AFI song, as this could easily have been a cry eminating from my own sleepless meanderings into the deep of consciousness.
