I think it's funny how he says "the scene has died away" and it was 1979. I bet he's hating the punk scene right now.

the scene "died away" when slam dancing stopped being about translation/ transferrence of mutual energy & started being about shirtless, naked-chested little boys running around in circles chasing each other's tails..... and I knew the coffin was nailed shut when the crowd surfers started getting caught by the goons at the front of the stage, & sent back to their positions with a little pat on their cute little 'hawks & Hot Topic insta-punk underoos. And yeah, I'm old... but not ~really~ bitter-- just hate it when pp, forget that punk is an ideology, not a hairstyle.

How can you say that the deaths of Sid and Nancy were important? Nancy was a drug addicted whore groupie and Sid Vicious was a joke. He couldn't play his instrument, he didn't record with the Pistols(pretty much a joke themselves) on Nevermind the Bollocks. Two people the scence and the world are better off without.

I think the song means alot of things. To me personally and on a larger scale. First, the lyric "Fast cars, cheap thrills, rich girls, fine wine" and subsequent, are referring to the materialistic world many of us tend to slip into. This is charged up even more by this... "it's a futuristic modern world but things aren't what they seem someday you'd better wake up from this stupid fantasy". The part where he says, "Things seem so much different now, the scene has died away" reminds me of the two deaths of Sid and Nancy, which happened just 2 years before the release of this song. Those two deaths shook the punk rock world. Things would never be the same again and I think this particular lyric reflects that angst.

the scene isnt dead you could say, more or less its just a little too popular and no one wants to be in on it. i stand by minor threat, varukers, exploited, GBH, supersuckers and the likes in hope that something will come up eventually making it like it was during the 80's when the scene was considered dead by all the people who didnt know about the punks vs. skins fights twice a week at the GBH-like shows. oh how i wish i was alive then, it would have been so much cooler than this 'punk scene' that is no more than a bunch of kids now. i cant say im not one of them because im only 15, but later, i hope there will be a revival, and we will be at the head of it. i agree that leather jackets, plaid pants and multi colored mohawks, liberty spikes or a combonation of the two have been overused and worn, but now, the punk revival will begin, during the height of the 'punk trend' the scene has never been more dead. there may be a revival, there may be a different occourance all together, but the punk ideal lives on, the longing for a simple lifestyle of eating, sleeping, going to work and playing music as a interwoven society and subculture instead of judgement and 'categories' of the music we all love. unity can be reached, and unity will be reached, but now when there are a million bands that everyone knows and a million more that are yet undiscovered, there is too much focus on 'punk' in general. punk will not take people by storm, but it will gain followers slowly and steadily in cities where the true believers in the music, unity, and the dedication for change will appeal to all, but it has to be searched for.

Everyone who posted anything in response to this song is infected with AIDS, with the exception of Charvarna and myself. Oh, and maybe the kid who said he heard this song in one of the Crusty videos.

i very much agree with you H20GOPunx, except that i believe that there STILL is a scene, it's just temporarily on lock down... nobody will stop the show we go to from happening, and we won't be pushed out of our own scene, but we have a bunch of impersanators running around trying to barge in and change the scene. i'm not saying i'm a hardcore punk, this is just a view from the outside.
