i dont think its much of a stalker , love is almost stalking . you seek out the one you love. anyhow , the song to me is how edbear described . something you fear and back off on , she just sounds like shes uncertain about something and needs time to go through the motions.

speaking of new interpretations... I think it's about a relationship where she's fallen harder than she meant to... So now that's she's realized she's fallen for someone not to be fallen for, she's trying to pick herself back up by telling them that they don't really know who she is. By saying "Must be strangely exciting; To watch the stoic squirm;", I feel she means that they are happy that they have her where she is because she's notorious for being a stoic (very indifferent)... So now that person has caused her to feel emotion, and then feel more emotion by being angry at herself for feeling that emotion. Maybe I'm just rambling now.

you guys put some great interpretations up here. id have to say i agree with dhaval and edbear tho. even tho it is from City of Angels and their interpretations dont involve that...its just too mean a song to be about the characters' romance tho. anyway, yeah, its about a stalker im thinking, and while its sweet at first that someone likes u so much, its kinda disturbing. i also think maybe shes been hurt before and is afraid of that. great great song!

Same here...I think this is her best song and there's a few that I like. I admire her talent, I'm just not a big fan of hers. Anyways, great song from a good movie. =)

welllll to me this song is about being hurt and not letting ur self feel again. maybe hurt by this person once already or by someone different but the whole ur not aloud ur uninvited makes me think of someone hurting you and you still like them but u are upset and feel if they would have cared or deserved you in the first place then they wouldn't have done whatever they did

Ever since the fist time I heard this song I thought it was about rape. Her talking to (singing) to her rappist. The line "You speak of my love like You have experienced love like mine before." Like he has raped someone before.

Actually, I think it's written from someone who has an admirer, but she is fighting it. Maybe she's been hurt in the past, or she's not ready for something so serious. So she scoffs at him. It's sort of like three stages. At first, she's like "Yes, thank you I'm flattered. But I just cannot do thi snow." Then she goes to stage two. The music builds a little more. "Look, I understand. And you must really like to make me squirm and feel all uncomfortable, right? But I am NOT interested. No matter how much I want to, I can't." Then stage three. She's almost like putting her foot down. "I know you think you love me, but you don't! You think you know love? You think you've ever experienced anything like MY love before? You have to stop! This is not allowed!" And the music crescendos and builds until..... It's all suddenly calm. And then finally, the end. She caves in. "I don't think you unworthy of my love.....I just need to think about this before I plunge right in." And then I like to think that the sudden crash of the music back to the heavy stuff is her deciding, plunging in dramatically, and ultimately being happy. It's like a beutiful poem. Pretty cheesy, huh.

i love this song the only think not clear in the song is when she says your not allowed. its very open to interpretation because she never says why. maby she did that so we could relate. or if it based on a real life experience then maby she didnt want to say why. i think in the end this is just her rejecting someone. for reasons of her own. 1 2 Next

The other interpretations are interesting, but basically this was for "City of Angels" and speaks about the angel's desire for the woman he cannot physically touch...because he is 'not invited' to partake in earthly sensations. The part: I don't think you unworthy I need a moment to deliberate... Is when she realizes that the angel intends to sacrifice his eternal life in order to be with her. Should she encourage him to do this? What a terrible responsibility. I need a moment to deliberate...

I have felt this way. I wasnt looking for a relationship of any sort, maybe a nice fling, but this guy was really sort of pushy and made me feel weird around him, so much that I didnt want to even be his friend. I think that is somewhat like what she is singing about.

I think this is about someone being having a secret admirer reveal themself to her. She is flattered, but feels violated at the same time. This is someone who has thought of her in ways she did not ask for. She needs time to absorb this and he doesn't seem to want to give it to her. I think this is a great song because we always think of having a secret admirer as a GOOD thing, but it is really just a few steps short of stalking. The woman in this song is trying to figure out which is which.

Oh, man. I think all of the interpretations of this song are great. I usually don't comment on this site, but I was listening to Uninvited today and realized how much I love it. Probably one of my favourites. Definitely up there. The suggestion of a potential lesbian relationship or proposition: that's what I was thinking also. I mean...you can read any interpretation into it, really. But I could definitely see this. I think...in general...it's about considering something totally alien and new and uncertain and tentative and reluctant, unwilling, unable... Hah. The two lines that really say it all, I think are 'An unfortunate slight' and, of course 'I need a moment to deliberate.' I don't think it's fair to limit interpretations to those that are based solely on the plot of the movie. Unless Alanis herself has said that was what the song was written about... Sure it was on the soundtrack, sure it fits. But really, I'm not entirely convinced that it has much to do with angels, mortality, etc. That's just one of the many possible interpretations. Sorry for rehashing what everyone else has said. Thanks for considering.

This song was probably written about the media. It was written after her intense rise to fame, and was not altered to fit the soundtrack. "You speak of my love like you have experienced love like mine before." Tabloids. "Must be strangely exciting to watch the stoic squirm." TV interviews. "An unfortunate slight." Alanis wanted to make good music, but all the media attention came as an unfortunate slight. "Like anyone would be I am flattered by your fascination with me." She's flattered by the media's fascination, but wants them to leave her alone.

That is a real nice translation of the song. Though I think that this song is written in the form of the relationship between the two characters in the movie. I agree with all of the steps that it went through, each a little more firmer, each reveiling a little bit more about her feelings, she was discovering her own feelings in the song she did not even know. But, in my opinion, everytime she said, "You, you're not allowed, you're uninvited, an unfortunate slight" she is refering to their differences in between the two characters in the movie. In the verses she was talking about their equalities and about him and her and the love they have for each other, but then she remembers he is an angel, he is uninvited, and unfortunate slight of plans. So everytime she builds herself up in the verses then at the end she sees the reality of it all. But i guess it depends on the person and their outlook, that is why i like Alanis Morissette's songs, everytime you hear any of her songs you have to dig deep and find a meaning, all her songs are deep, and they all describe one of her emotions, she holds nothing back. She is the most talented artist in my eyes. She will never die as long as i keep playing her songs... (Hence) her songs are her life. Christopher

this was actually a song i did for a dance class and we interpretted it together...we found it was about a stalker-like admirer who won't leave her alone...all she does is keep turning him down but in the nicest ways possible because she doesn't think this relationship or crush could be true...probably a result from a bad experience she doesn't trust anyone especially someone who is pursuing her with such intensity...

I have a new interpretation.... I think this could be about a woman propositioning her. She has never considered a lesbian relationship before and dismisses it at first - but the last line.....well she's considering it now.

I don't think it's about a stalker or anything like that. She's simply saying to this guy who likes her that "yes" she enjoys the attention; she likes knowing that someone is attracted to her, that someone wants her...but she's just not looking for a relationship with him. Then at the end of the song she says that it's not that she doesn't think he's good enough for her, it's jus that she needs time to think it through....that's it......and I can totally identify. GREAT SONG!!!
