Personally I think it could be about his dad again. Or something. Maybe he's stressed from the work. Like it's following on from Boiled Frogs. Also... It does kinda sound like George singing "Don't people do damage to you much too late?" If you listen closely right at the start of it you hear George's scream for sure but then he sings normally after... :-S

I think it's actually George singing the back up vocals in the chorus, believe it or not. Not Wade. Incredible song.

I think the placement of this song on the album after "keep it on wax" and "to a friend" is an important theme to finding the meaning of the song. "rough hands" is about a situation the narrator has been through, dealing with a girl that has troubled him. The situation is complicated with him and the girl, because she loves someone else and he is trying to convince her to be with him. "Sometimes love isn't about how much he worships you Or how much you're willing to change to suit them" he tries so hard at 'winning her over' that he is tired and broken, hence the rough hands. i think the background singing is actually "Two people, too damaged, too much, too late."

thbkk, its actually "live through this lie" not "live through this life" and "sometimes love isn't about how much he worships you" is actually "sometimes love isn't about how much someone suits you" And those came from the CD booklet, so theyre pretty accurate methinks.

i think that he is denying his commitment to a women. this is evident from the line " it doesn't matter because i am not her man" the first verse states how nothing is ever good enough for her and she critiscises the way he acts. "Well, I'd swear every other word if I could or would make an attempt" - he is getting sick of her constantly having a go at him, and he would do whatever he could to make her as unhappy as he is, but he is too tired. "Sometimes love isn't about how much he worships you Or how much you're willing to change to suit them" - he has tried to worship her and change to suit her, but he feels that love means putting up with her. he is so sick of the routine of her not being satisfied he is questioning the meaning of love. he wants her to love him but no matter what he does it isn't good enough for her. but he is so tired from working and the routine of every day life that he is giving up on a relationship. he feels bad about the way he is neglecting her but there is nothing that he can, or wants to do about it. i think that perhaps the girlfriend is hard work and he has to work alot at the relationship causing to have "rough hands", no matter what he does it doesn't satisfy her. "one day she will say "im tired"- one day she will get rid of him because she is bored of him, and theres nothing that he can do about that because he has tried his hardest. All my bones are dust And my heart's sealed with rust These hands will always be rough I know these wont count for much - the bones and hearts are what keeps humans going and he feels as if he is falling apart. he feels that his hands will always be rough and coarse and never good enough for anyone, and he thinks he knows that he won't count for much either.
