| N0 C0DE, practically all of their songs were about drugs. All of Dirt is about a Heroin addiction from beginning to end. I do agree with you about this song not being about drugs though. One thing, please never compare anyone from AIC to Kurt Cobain, that guy is a pussy. | |

| this song could honestly be a million things....i think that it's about someone calling out for help from someone and he' can't find it so he starts slowly slipping into his own world where his own demons and fears take him over and somehow everything that was going right now starts to fall to pieces..... 1 2 Next | |

| I love this song too, but I want to talk about the cleverness of the video to this and the EP title! I know this is for writing about the song, but I think this is relevent too; The story goes that... Jerry did a science experiment and put some flies in a jar of a meat, and some in an empty jar. In the Jar with no meat the flies started turning on each other, so they called the EP Jar Of Flies. In the video to 'I Stay Away' the band (in clay form) are at a circus and when the boy opens the Jar Of Flies the flies cause things to go wrong, eg animals turning on the owners. I think this has a message in itself, about using thoughts in the wrong way, the flies are released which causes chaos, but what would happen if thos 'flies' were kept bottled up inside.... Just a thought! | |

| I think it is about a women who has continously cheated on him but he has been unable to leave. "So close a lady shifty eyes shady." Finally he has reached a point "tears that soak a callous heart" where he isn't taking her back. He is finally heading "South". Her "weakeness" for cheating has made him stronger. Which she finally realizes. He has broke his addiction to her and he stays away. | |

| O.k.! I admit it! I'm a VH1 whore. Anyway, I recently saw Jerry Cantrell in an interview and he commented on the fact that he wrote most of the lyrics for most of the songs (he is actually credited for doing such, he is not just claiming this). It's kind of like everyone assuming that Jim Morrison wrote all of the Doors lyrics. Morrison did not write the lyrics for any of the top 40 hits except L.A. Woman. Similarly, Cantrell, who is/was not a drug addict, does not ALWAYS write about heroin and addiction. The glaring exception is The Rooster. | |

| This song is about the man and the drug. Man says what he wants to do, "want to travel south." Drug replies, "why you act crazy?" "I am enlightened, your weakness builds me so some day you will see." AIC is nothing less than fantastic, and anyone who says that Staley is anything other than a phenominal singer is abviously deaf. Good luck Jerry | |

| I interpret it that Layne and Demri's relationship was pretty close to imploding and Layne needed to be away for quite some time. But at the end, when Layne really wails, it's just ...great shit man. | |

| This is comment 414 for me and I chose this song because it runs at 4 minutes, 14 seconds (4:14). I like this song because of the string arrangements and the guitar solo a little more than halfway through the song. This is a song that makes you sing along with it even you probably should not. Otherwise, it's still almost perfect. To me, this song means that somebody hates being around somebody else for some reason that's never fully explained. It's still a great song otherwise. | |

| This song reminds me of myself... I don't get involved with things and most people just seem so stupid or crazy I prefer to "just let 'em spin" outside my door. I think the song's about "you don't get in my business and I'll stay out of yours". It may be about any number of things...definitely one of AICs best. | |

| This song is very pertinent to my life because here's what I think it means. The guy has a woman in his life who has either cheated on him, or simply doesn't reciprocate his love towards her. He says that, even though this is very painful too, it is easier to simply "stay away" from her, rather than be with her and be miserable because whenever he is with her, she drives him crazy inside and he can't overcome his unrequited loving feelings for her. I have found that this song epitomizes my life, because I have been madly in love with a girl for 7 years now. She is my best friend, but that's all she sees me as, too. Even though I love her with all my heart, and I'd probably get down on bended knee right now if it were up to me, it sometimes is easier to stay away from her so the powerful romantic feelings I have for her don't drive me totally insane. | |

| "but in reality he's just faking"- crackermcnacca. what are you talking about. aic fake???? how could you say something like that. it's not about him trying to be cool. it's about him wanting to be left alone.he was dead in his apartment for how long before he was found? that right there proves that this song wasn't him trying to be cool. it was him asking to be left alone | |

| Seriously,.. why does Every AIC song " need to be about drugs"? Kurt cobain was a heroin addict,.... did everyone think all of his songs were about heroin? NO!!! Just because the writer of the song was an addict does not mean that the song is about drugs or getting a fix. I think this song is about a woman but not one who cheats on him. I believe this because of the light hearted yet passionate play throughout the verses but then when the chorus hits the listener is flushed with a nihlistic self loathing sound that seems to suggest that saying "I stay away" causes great pain to him. This woman seemsto Layne to be one of the only people in the world capable of loving him and that he fails her some how,... and he is so ashamed of his failure .... So because layne and his wife were both users this song COULD be about heroin... but not every one song is.... | |
