The song seems to be about teenage mothers and the hardships they face emotionally and socially. I would say the religious/social commentary comes around one of the chorus lines when Staley sings "Ain't no day the sun don't crack, you try and brand some name across my back as if you care, find someone to tell you.." I think that represents how teenage mothers and their children are often looked down upon in society and that (keep in mind MY interpretation) it's hypocritical that people don't seem to do this as much with teenage fathers. It also seems a little weird the teenage mother is looked down on, especially by the religious, but at the same time, her getting an abortion is supposedly wrong. For a Washington band, they remind me a lot of the south, where I'm from. Teenage pregnancy is a big issue down here.

This interpretation is totally wrong, but when I was a kid and I listened to this song, I always envisioned some weird alien community worshipping some mother-like deity, who shined so bright she was like sunshine to them. They worship her and are like slaves, but then one day one gets too ambitious and tries to touch the Mother in hopes of receiving some of her power, and is instantly destroyed.

from what I get, the verses are about some guy who raped a woman"am I too congtagious full of sick desire" and the chorus seems like someone telling the story of the rape "then some dude came down to tocuh the Mother" anyways.... great song

I always thought that maybe "came down to touch the Mother" had some religious meaning
