This is an amazing song. Dark, very depressing. Once again about heroin. My personal favorite on their self titled album. Layne is basically saying that he's way in over his head with the heroin. "pupils widen change their hue, rapid brown avoid clear blue"... "why's it have to be this way" he's regretting everything. "innocence spins cold cocoon. grow to see the pain too soon" is pretty self explanitory. it also ties into a lyric from rotten apple "what i see is unreal. ive written my own part, eat of the apple so young, i'm crawling back to start" He's saying that he's seen some terrible things that have left him scarred. now the part where it sounds like he's mumbling is where he admits that he's too young to already be dying. it's as if he's talking to the heroin in a way.

Why is it so many Alice in Chains fans are druggies? Haven't they learned anything? Do not answer me. Just think.

Well the refrence to drugs if you people are too blind to see it is not heroin, but psychadelics. "shapes and colors shift with mood pupils widen, change thier hue" could only be a refrence to hallucinagens.

P.S. i read some where that they was at this studio by a lake or swamp and they heard these frogs so they took all the expensive recording equipment to record the frogs and its cost a whole shit load of money 2 do it, but they didnt know what 2 do with the frog recordings so they made a song and called it frogs..

Or Frogs could refer to the frogs that were outside of the studio when the song was written. Those frogs were eventually dubbed into the begining of the song. Listen closely and you can hear them. Again, I'm going to agree with Angry Sar. If you guys were true fans drug use wouldn't be something that you'd even consider.

i have this song on the unplugged album and in my opinion this is one of their worst songs. it's just too slow and doesnt have a real strong rhythm. but thats just my opinion.

"Why is it so many Alice in Chains fans are druggies? Haven't they learned anything? Do not answer me. Just think." Wel, I've thought & I'm answering anyway. I think it's more drug users who are AIC fans rather than AIC fan who are drug users. AIC lyrics help users through their addictions. & just because an AIC fan uses drugs it doesn't mean they're not a true fan, that's such a fucking ignorant thing to say. I'm not trying to start an argument, just maybe you should be the one who thinks what they're saying before they say it. It could hurt a lot of people. "Again, I'm going to agree with Angry Sar. If you guys were true fans drug use wouldn't be something that you'd even consider." A lot of fans will have been users before getting into AIC music, so they wouldn't have been considering it while charting Layne's decline. Again, I'm not trying to be awkward, just sticking up for any users who might read this. R.I.P ~~~~ Layne ~~~~~ We Die (Too) Young

Sounds more like it's about friends having an argument and lying to each other about it, and the general depression involved with arguing people that are close to you.

I always thought it was about a bad lsd trip, but reading some of the stuff written about friendship, I can definitely see that point of view. And let me say that I most certainly do not believe that every song by Alice in Chains is about drugs. But on to my reasons: I am pretty sure that mars is right saying that frogs is a slang term for lsd. Also, on hallucinogens, certain sounds can put you into a bad trip. I would imagine that the sounds frogs make can induce paranoia. The first verse kind of explains what it is like to be in a bad trip. You are separated from everything. You feel like you are the only one and that no one can help you and most of the time it's true. You just have to outlast it. The second verse seems to describe the trip going on. And by saying rapid brown avoid clear blue seems to me that this is where things may go wrong. Blue is a very peaceful and serene color, and brown is just dingy and not pleasant to look at. He can't avoid it. The chorus - he's asking why did it happen and when will it end. Now for the third verse. If you have ever consumed a decent amount, you would see strong visuals, not even with just lsd, mushrooms can bring this on. Things bloom from other things, like flowers. The grass and trees, they look like flowers are blooming from them. Now this eerie tune he hears could send him spiraling into his bad trip. Like I said before, when you are in one, it is so hard to escape it, you feel like you are trapped, hence the cocoon. And then you see the bad shit that freaks you out. The very last part seems to me like its his conscience telling to stop doing this to himself.

Wow... I'm totally going to have to listen to this one again now... nice interp. To me this song has always seemed to be about betrayal, it feels like when a friend or someone you trust stabs you in the back...but I'm sure its really about drugs. (Stupid stupid sexy Layne!) >:/

The Unplugged version has a different ending: At 7 AM on a Tuesday, an August. Next week, I turn 28. I'm still young. It'll be me Off the wall I scrape. . . you. I gotta wait (wake?). Show me you're afraid. That's my fate Of the day? My fate. . . Never gonna fuck with me again. Don't fuck with me again. (unint.) you. Irate. . . I always heard the wait/wake thing as 'wait'. I was thinking, it might even be "I got away." I don't know what the second-to-last line is.

It does sound like it is about heroin, but it doesn't add up right. He says "Pupils Widen" and "Makes Your Eyes Dialate" heroin doesn't do that, your pupils constrict when you are on heroin, to the point of pin pricks. So that does leave me wondering...

this to me is about a friend that you trust that goes and does things behind your back, yet at the same time tries to help you with stuff you know hes doing to you. "Are you like me, confused All included but you" he pretends to be know how your feeling when he is purposly feeding you lies.

those lines of that songs are no riddles =) for the hero's or X-hero's you know pupils get very dialated, you see spots, and get very dizzy during acute withdrawal, "rapid brown avoid clear blue" would be using, constricting the pupils, he had blue eyes, and he's fighting off the temtation so he's avoiding and his puils are quite wide. We also know that cocaine burns "clear blue" =)
