Need I say anything except RIP Layne Staley, rest in peace. "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised Not to plan my funeral before the body dies"-seems kinda poignant now...

this song came out in a time in my life when i couldn't understand the meaning as much as i could feel the music, music helps you through bumpy times in your life and this one is definately at the top of the list. thanks AIC.

KRBSRACING31K not a bad theory and i see where u come from but idt thats not it. Let the sun never blind your eyes -means for the media not to be blinded by just tryin to get a good story and makin up rumors Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind - let layne sleep without worring about rumors (like grindin ur teeth when ur angry) Hear a sound from a voice inside -not 100% on this sentence but i think its like since ppl hear about the rumors in the news that they think it must be true.

I think in this song he was saying don't plan the funeral before the body dies he was wanting to show that he was going to get over the drug shit and wanted to and he wanted to show that he wasn't just this junkie. I really wish he could have.

I think aicguy and HardRocker have the right gist, about the media attention. "Come the morning light, it's a see through show What you may have heard and what you think you know" : "may have heard", "think you know" obviously refer to unfounded knowledge, rumors, that the "morning light" dispels "Sure to play a part, so you love the game And in truth your lies become one and same": the media love their importance, so they adore this love-hate relationship they build with artists; and such, when the media generate and propagate rumors as 'fact' (ET and Extra! anyone?) "in truth [their] lies become one and same" (thus could the lines "I could set you free, rather hear the sound Of your body breaking as I take you down" refer to a possible lawsuit?) and finally, can't we extrapolate that "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised Not to plan my funeral before the body dies" refers to the oblivion the media like to sink 'outdated' celebrities into? Couldn't Cantrell be calling out the hypocrites of the media for dismissing them once they've used Staley's drug abuse as rumor fodder?

this is such a great song, and the lyrics sound so powerful, but what are they about?

It's basically about the media and fan's own hounding of the band, spreading outlandish rumors about Layne and speculating if the band broke up, and this is their rebuttal. 1

I thought it was about dispelling rumors that the band had broken up. "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised not to plan my funeral for the body dies." I interpret as "Don't say that we've broken up until you've heard it from us."

Well.... Whether or not you are asleep OR awake, when you are on meth you grind your teeth no matter what. Usually more so when you are asleep, because you cannot conciously make an effort to stop; generally when you wake up from sleep after a week long meth binge, your jaws ache like never before from grinding. ...so I don't really think that line is relevant to meth use. But that's just me. RIP Layne

Well, Jerry mentions in the liner notes from the Music Bank that Grind is his way of saying fuck you to the media for all of their bogus stories, without going to their level.

"Let me sleep so my teeth won't grind" If this song is about anger towards the media, perhaps this line is a way of saying "Gimme some peace to do my own thing"? Think about it, when people get angry, sometimes they grind their teeth. Could be that simple. Just an idea though

I definitely see where both HardRoker and KRBSRACING are coming from, but if it is about drugs, it doesn't really apply to just meth. I would say maybe a hallucinogen. People who took too much were said stair into the sun until they went blind, but that was back in the 60s and 70s. Also, let me sleep so my teeth won't grind can imply drugs. When you are on some drugs, your teeth grind together.

Hi! I'm Grind838 and I'm new here. This is my first post: This song is the best song from AIC's self-titled album. Maybe, one of the best songs next to 'Nutshell' and 'Fear the Voices'

Jerry wrote this to say f*ck off to the media who is always hounding them, mainly Layne, with all the rumors about him before his death, lossing fingers, arms, legs so on so forth,Jerry wanted to say hey, don't say i'm dead,or Layne's dead till i am dead,so he said in the Music Bank booklet...RIP Layne, you finally got to go home
