| I think its been settled this song is about Cantrell's father in vietnam. But i was watching MTV a while back, shortly after Cantrell's new cd came out, and he was hosting MTV rock show or something, and he told a story about how at some concert i think it was, someone stole his dads dog tags that he wore around his neck. Later these girls came and gave them back, and he was very happy. But not soon after he had a party at his house and someone stole them off the mantlepiece of his home. How fucked up is that? That would be like stealing someones mother's ashes or something. People these days. Great song, the acoustic is incredible. | |

| A classic depiction of survival and sheer determination, with the battlefield as an apt metaphor. | |

| I always heard his dad was a sniper; he'd 'roost' somewhere with concealment and snipe the enemy. He'd often have to escape while several viet cong were trying to kill him, "come to snuff the rooster". | |

| The people in his Jerrys Dads Platoon nicknamed him rooster and when his dad came back from the war he would tell his son chilling stories then he would say "they haven't found a way to kill me yet" | |

| Meaning becomes obvious after reading the lyrics, seeing the video (full of Vietnam dramatizations and shots of an older man, who I'm assuming is Jerry Sr.) and the liner notes from Dirt in which Jerry thanks "Jerry Cantrell Sr. (The Rooster)" | |
