I've heard a lot of weird ideas about this but it's clearly about Cantrell's dad in Vietnam. When I was a kid I thought it was about Rooster snuff...it's an actual brand of dip....I thought they were singing about dipping.

About Vietnam They called him rooster....his nickname i guess.Acording to my mom Rooster was Layne's father. But that's what my mom thinks. She heard it on the way home from Austin, When Layne Stayle was reported dead.I relate to it so much cause my both my uncle's were in Vietnam. It's tough but we all stick in there with them when times get hard!

Rooster was a nickname for M60 gunners in vietnam (still is in some parts of the Army). Because of the cock a doodle doo the gun let off. If you're a gunner you know the feeling of this song perfectly. (Ok or a 240 gunner, whatever)

....It wasn't about Cantrells dads head bobbing up and down like a rooster or screaming eagles... In Veitnam the infantry's symbol was the rooster, which explains why they are coming to snuff the rooster.

'Rooster' is a reflection on a trooper's time in the shit. I really like this song. I also suggest that AIC fans download the song 'Still In Saigon' by the Charlie Daniels Band. What am I willing to bet that the latter tune somehow mirrors what Cantrell's dad felt like after he escaped Vietnam. 1 2 3 Next

Jerry Cantrell, Jr. wrote this song about Jerry Cantrell, Sr. and the absolute horror stories he's been told about Vietnam by his father... It's amazingly powerful.. Especially with Layne Staley's voice.. If you DO like this song.. I HIGHLY suggest you listen to the acoustic version from MTV Unplugged.

um stop think listen to the lyrics: my buddys breathing his dying breath... army green was no safe bet.... wife and kids and household pet..... its blatant the song is about his father in vietnam the question is what was or is the rooster. The american is the rooster, the flag the US marines carried depicted a bald eagle having no idea that an eagle exists the vietcong assumed that it was a rooster as rooster farming is important in vietnam and when they would attack the americans they would go to kill or snuff the rooster ! mystery solved!

definitly about vietnam i think it has something to do with the 101 airborne(screaming eagles) the VC had no concept of eagles the closest thing was chickens which they called the 101 therefore the songs title rooster
