Directly from the linear notes of the Music Bank box set (written by Cantrell): "Ours was a divorced family, I was the older brother and we had a sister Cheri in the middle. As you know, when you're a kid there's no way you wanna hang out with your four-year-younger brother. You'll take care of the guy if someone's trying to kick his ass, but other than that you don't wanna know. I think I was really hard on him, especially without my father around. David had nbody, he split to live with my Dad and we didn't see much of each other for a good 6 or 7 years. That song was about the time we were apart, and like 'Rooster' was my dad, it was a way of trying to build a bridge."

"Thanks. We've been... we've been waiting a long time to play this show, and uh, I'd like to thank you all for coming to see it. Um, it means a lot to us, hope we have a good time, play some good songs for you." ---- Layne Staley, after playing 'Brother' on the Unplugged cd. 1

Probably my favorite AIC song, or at least in the top five. It's just beautiful to me. Oddly enough though, I actually prefer the album version over the Unplugged version. But they're both mezmerizing.

Hah...After not being able to sleep, I decided to pick up a guitar and I ended up learning this song. Must have been 3am and I dont think I ever did get to sleep that night. Anyway, Cantrell wrote the song about (duh) his brother, Howard. I recall Cantrell saying that he didnt always treat his brother as well as he should have and this was an attempt to reconcile with him.

Since my fahter's death, I can really relate this song to my personal insanity and the distand relationship between me and my brother. The death has made it harder for us to see eachother and even more depressing but we have a determination none the less.

Just a side note, the version on Facelift features Ann Wilson (from Heart) on backup vocals during the chorus. She also did the backing vocals when AIC (sans Layne, of course) performed this at the 2005 Tsunami Relief concert.

the first verse means something to me, it's how i feel when i get really depressed because of the assholes at school. "frozen in the place i hide" it's a mental place, where i can deny that i value their opinions, when really my bad brain chemicals are crushing my self esteem. i'm not emo. i like grunge music and csny. i wear cowboy boots and a pink shirt. who cares?
