Yes Layne did feel as if the media was giving him pressure. They automatically assumed he was an addict. He was though, but they couldnt see him as a person. Everything they wrote about him related to drugs. The labels got to him, he wasnt a junkie, he was a human being.

I always saw it as Layne's suicide note. Beautiful vocals & some of the most tasteful and soulful guitar playing you'll ever hear.

I love it when people say "easy song to understand". The only song that is truly "easy to understand", that I can think of right now, is "Happy Birthday". Every other song ever written is open to many interpretations. I always took the lyrics to be about power-hungry government. I know, you never looked at it that way, so you're making a face as if I'm nuts right now. But look at the lyrics... Chasing "misprinted lies" could easily relate to the crap the media and the government spews out. The lines about "gift of self" and "privacy" being screwed over could easily relate to how the government strips you of one personal liberty after another. And finally, the line "If I can't be my own..." could easily represent the desire for freedom. I'm not saying that this is what Layne had in mind, but it isn't any worse than any other interpretation above. And it makes sense to me. It could also easily be taken to mean that Layne is tired of being dragged through the mud by writers, and losing his privacy, and all that. This also easily applies. So tell me again how "easy" it is to understand.

I think it's about how society wants everyone to fit into something and everyone then tries to then to do it, like sheep. He seems to refuse to want to be a part of it, that's why he "fights this battle all alone". He also says if I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead. I think nutshell is describing how he feels confined by the systematic surroundings in his life. It's funny because I while before I came to this I was thinking just the same thing, although I didn't have the song in mind.

I think it's about how the world follows the media (specifically when it looks into the lives of the famous) and listens to just about everything they say, and that the writer would just love to have a good private life. And shoot up heroin. Good song.

why is he chasing misprinted lies if he just wants his "self" anyway??

It seems like he doesnt want to be with someone or something(possibly herion) Its hard for him to fight the battle of the addiction or he might be afraid to lose someone he cares about so he wouldnt want to tell her. And maybe the decision is so hard he'd just rather be dead.

its about realizing that no matter how many people misunderstand or cant accept you for the way you are.. you wont give in to being conformitized. its a fight between being well known and accepted.. to being notorious, bitched about and exploited. and u couldnt give a damn

This song is about how lonely and depressed Layne really was. When he "fights" he means he is trying to fight his drug addictions alone. However it is very hard for him because he has to support system to get him through it. He has no one or even his own family helping out. When he says his privacy is raked he means that the media is always constantly focusing on his drug problems rather than the awesome music he puts out. He has enough and he he can't take it anymore. If he can't fix anything or be his true self again he would rather be dead. This song is so powerful. It really does feel like this is his suicide note. My favorite AIC song ever but its so painful to listen to especially since he has passed on. RIP Layne.

this song represents his struggle in a "nutshell". people believe everything they read to the point that he felt that noone really "knew" him, therefor, he has noone and no place to call home. maybe he regrets the stardom because there's no longer a real sense of privacy, but he'll continue to be his own
