| As one of the oldest Alk3 fans (in age), this song is about settling. Basically, the older you get, the more you realize how people settle for something less than they imagined they ever would. How many people stay in relationships or jobs or cities - because it's 'comfortable'. And that is all they have known? I see it everyday everywhere. People giving up on dreams and faking it (affectations) because it's easier to settle than to get what you really want. Think about it. Fyi -- here are the lyrics from the CD liner: SETTLE FOR SATIN It's not so much a storm But just a cloud that lives inside of me He doesn't stir so easily these days But when he wakes he goes the distance In a marathon of days too long Open containers that sing songs You'll never dream again but you can pray I guess we all settle in to what we know I guess we always settle in, we know That there is comfort in our world Where darkness is the only thing we see And cold is all we have to breathe Where affectations keep us company Where the lies we tell to eyes that roll in doubt Are somehow out of our control It's not about the scars But more the crowds that walk all over me They don't give up too easily these days But when they break they go to pieces Fall apart right here in North Side bars Under a sky that knows no stars You'll never shine again but you will stay I guess we all settle in to what we know I guess we always settle in, we know That there is comfort in our world Where darkness is the only thing we see And cold is all we have to breathe Where affectations keep us company Where the lies we tell to eyes that roll in doubt Are somehow out of our control That there is comfort in our world Where darkness is the only thing we see And cold is all we have to breathe Where affectations keep us company Where the lies we tell to eyes that roll in doubt Are somehow out of our control We lost control | |

| ^Well said. I've seen lots of people give up their pursuit of a dream simply because they are offered another option that seems more convenient. I'm not too sure about the title though. I could see why you might have to settle for a cheaper fabric or something, but satin sounds pretty good to me. Any ideas? | |

| people say this album is overproduced and whatnot...but, people say a lot of things, such as "Watching Oprah has changed my life"...soo that just goes to show what some people say my point being, this album is great also, a lot of people get really angry about mistaken lyrics, but people need to keep in mind its even possible for liner notes to have mistakes, the artists dont necessarily always write them. Not saying that this is the case with any songs from this album, but its just something keep in mind. | |

| My favorite song by Dan on the album. Sheer awesomeness Dan's songs always seem to have a little sparkle in them, but still really hard choice to decide who makes the better songs. It's like choosing I dunno, something really hard to choose. | |

| dan: One of my favorite Alkaline Trio songs, especially of the songs that I have written. Something about the chords in the verses that I like a lot… Derek helped me work this one out and get it to a stage where we could record it and show it to Matt. He said he was really into it… I was stoked because it was at around this time that I felt like I was coming out of a writing slump… We worked on it a bunch more during pre-production, and came up with cool harmonies between the bass and guitar, and also totally reworked the bridge… This song was written for anybody who thinks it’s okay to sit in a bar six or seven nights a week and complain about how their life is going nowhere. If this is you, you are a total bum-out, you are your worst enemy, the problem and the solution. This is what it means to Settle For Satin, you’re already laying in a coffin, and you’re okay with that… This is not okay. Do something about it. The world can swallow you up, I wake up scared of that feeling almost everyday. But we need to find something we love, something we can live for, something that inspires us, a goal… Start living. -Dan Andriano | |

| I love this song. It was the first song off of the new album that I fell in love with. I love the lines - "It's not so much a storm But just a cloud that lives inside of me " and "It's not about the scars But more the cracks/crowds that walk all over me" It's got to have a hidden meaning. I think Dan's voice sounds great on this song, and I like how Dan and Matt kind of sing together on the chorus. | |

| Considering the bands focus/knowledge of the West Memphis Three, I think that this is credible. If Stidham had any lingering doubts about his revised view of his client, they were allayed during a visit when Jessie asked him who "Satin" was. Stidham didn't understand. "He handed me a pamphlet a preacher had given him that was all about Satan," Stidham would recall, "but Jessie could barely read it. And what he could read he thought was about somebody named 'Satin'." Now, with a jolt, Stidham got it. Jessie was referring to Satan, but never having read the unfamiliar name before, he was mispronouncing it as "Satin," like the fabric. Stidham was dumbfounded. As he discussed the pamphlet with Jessie, Stidham realized that the boy had heard of the devil, but never that he was called Satan. "It was one of the most ironic moments of the entire ordael," the lawyer later said. "There I was, sitting in a jail cell with this confessed satanic killer, and he's asking me who 'Satin' is." -Devils Knot, a book written by Mara Leveritt WM3.ORG | |

| I love this song. It seems Dan is saying that amongst the darkness in life that always seems to overtake everything...there are bright patches here and there. And you may never be perfect....but you are here...so you might as well push through life and make the best of it. At least that's what I get from it. | |

| Great song, love the chorus...one discrepancy with the lyrics however: 'Fall apart right here in north sapphires" is more than likely Fall apart right here in North Side Bars", in reference to the north side of Chicago, known for it's bar areas (Rush and Division, Wrigleyville, etc), and is also the boys' old stomping grounds, which makes more sense gramatically anyway. Also making it the second album in a row with only one booze reference, an idea once thought impossible given their earlier lyrical preferences. --H | |

| this is my favorite song off of crimson along with time to waste and burn. I guess I like this album alot cuz its got some completely different sounding stuff on there like those three songs i mentioned but also still shows traces of what their old stuff sounded like, with songs like mercy me, dethbed, and i was a prayer which kinda have that upbeat sound of songs on From here to Infirmary. But settle for satin was one that just stuck with me and by far one of dan's most mature songs. Ive always liked skiba's writing a little bit more cuz he writes about 70% of the songs, but dan has at least one amazing song on every album. For example, Maybe I'll catch Fire, Take Lots With Alcohol, One hundred stories, and this one. The lyrics are so amazing. "I guess we only settle in to what we know" is some of the truest words that i have ever heard cuz many people will go through life only settling into what they know or believe without ever discovering newer things or beliefs and rejecting them without trying them out. | |

| This song totally sums up the 'more mature' feel of the album. To me this is saying that his life isn't as depressing as it was before, but that doesn't mean those feelings aren't still there. And when they hit, they hit hard but ultimately that is where he draws inspiration for songs from. I take it as meaning he can draw a certain amount of comfort from that, because that is something he always goes back to, they are familiar feelings and therefore safe. And moreover, it seems to be what people expect from him. I mean we aren't listening to the music because it is all sunshine and light, right? And that puts a little bit more pressure on everything. And the first verse of the song goes: It's not so much a storm, but just a cloud that lives inside of me He doesn't stir so easily these days but when he wakes he goes the distance. In a marathon of days to long open containers that sing songs you'll never dream again but you can pray. I don't think Crimson is their best work ever, it doesn't need the electronic keyboard thing it has going on, but this song kicks ass because it is real and relatable. | |
