DOCTOR MY EYES
Jackson Browne

G B7sus4 Em
Doctor my eyes have seen the years
G B7 Em
And the slow parade of fears without crying
C G
Now I want to understand
B7sus4 Em
I have done all that I could
G B7 Em
To see the evil and the good without hiding
C G
You must help me if you can.

G C G D
Doctor my eyes and tell me what is wrong
B7sus4 Em
Was I unwi---se,
G C
To leave them open for so long.

G B7sus4 Em
As I've wondered through this world
G B7 Em
As each moment has unfurled I lay waiting
C G
To awaken from these dreams
B7sus4 Em
People go just where they will
G B7 Em
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
C G
That it's later than it seems.

G C G D
Doctor my eyes and tell me what you see
B7sus4 Em
I hear their cri---es,
G C
Just say if it's too late for me.

Instrumental Interlude

G C G D
Doctor my eyes that cannot see the sky
B7sus4 Em
Is this the pri--ce,
G C
For having learned how not to cry.

Instrumental fade out

That interpretation makes a lot of sense...if we tacked down the year when it was released, then it make sense if it was about Vietnam. If it's a protest song, it's veiled cleverly.

Whether it's about the vietnam conflict i can't say, but i can say that it's about someone who has been aware of a lot of injustice that others have not been aware of, and is feeling depressed that such injustice exists in the world.

i think this song could talk about the saying "what you don't know can't hurt you." i think he's saying that sometimes it really is unwise to "leave them open for so long," because sometimes it hurts more to know something you weren't meant to know, than never know at all.

This song contains some of the best, most meaningful lyrics in rock music to date and I'm not particularly a Jackson Browne fan

It seems like he's saying that he's gone through life unbiased and taking in as much as he can, and now that he's seen a lot of good and a lot of bad he's wondering if he'd be happier if he hadn't 'kept his eyes open for so long'

It is about a draftee who is waiting for his army physical. He is thinking about a way to fail it so he isn't sent off to Vietnam. He tells the doctor that his eyes are the problem. He has seen too much of the war.

I think it's about having seen a lot of awful crap and not being able to stop seeing it or thinking about it. And wondering if it's possible. It would make complete sense if it were about Vietnam.

by the way, i think the last lyric is actually "is this the price for having learned how not to cry" i think this song is about how the world and all the crap that goes on in it can really desensify people. many people are exposed to harsh things before they're ready, and they learn to erase all emotions and allow themselves to become unsensitive i think the purpose of this song is to let people know it's okay to cry and to feel pain for the things going on because they are painful and will cause emotion

this song is amazing, and i too am not what you would consider a jackson browne fan by any means... but good songs are good songs.... in response to dynamike... how could he have seen too much of the war when he is a draftee? 1

well this song was on his very first album, Jackson Browne, released in '72 which was in the middle of the Vietnam War so it could be about the war. I know that his father was serving in the military during the war, but i dont think Jackson Browne himself ever served. if his eyes had "seen too much" it definitely wasnt from first hand experience in Vietnam. As OpinionHead said it doesnt appear to be in protest to anything. I think the song is more about how once you come of age you can free your mind and take in observe as much as you can around you and try to be as unbiased as possible, but in the end, you will come to the realization that it is better to let people do what they will do because you just cant change the world
