Carlton, Vanessa White Houses Guitar Tab

Whoever did the first tab on White Houses did a HORRIBLE job. They're all wrong. So
here I am to correct this great injustice!!
Just to avoid confusion: I put the chord right above the word (or, in some cases, the
syllable) that you're supposed to play them on. If a word or phrase is in parentheses,
that means that it's still being spoken in the previous chord, so don't change chords
until, well, the chord's above the word you'd be singing. And one other thing, I put a
space before each of the lyric lines. If the chord is written one space left of the
first word, that means you play it before you sing it. If the chord's directly on top,
then you'd hit the chord and sing at the same time.
So, here you are-- White Houses, by Vanessa Carlton.
Verse 1:
C (hold for 1 measure, then proceed to play verse)
C
Crashed on the floor when I moved in
This little bungalow with some strange new friends
C/B
(Stay) up too late, and I'm too thin
We promise each other it's 'til the end
Am
(Now we're) spinning empty bottles, it's the five of us
With pretty eyed-boys girls die to trust
G
(I) can't resist the day--no, I can't resist the day...
Verse 2:
C
Jenny screams out and it's no pose
'Cause when she dances she goes and goes
C/B
Beer through the nose on an inside joke
I'm so excited, I haven't spoken
Am
(And) she's so pretty, and she's so sure
Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her
G
Summer's all in bloom
Summer's ending soon...
CHORUS:
F Am G
(It's al)right, and it's nice not to be so alone
F Am G F
But I hold on to your secrets in
C Am G C (hold for 1 measure, then proceed to verse 3)
White hou-ses
Verse 3:
C
Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at the things he said
C/B
(And) he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love, and we all got hurt
Am
(I) sneak into his car's cracked leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat,
G
(Boy, we're) going way too fast
It's all too sweet to last...
CHORUS 2:
F Am G
(It's al)right, and I put myself in his hands
F Am G F
But I hold on to his secrets in
C Am G
White hou-ses
F Am G
Love, or something ignites in my veins
F Am G F
And I pray it never fades, in
C Am G
White hou-ses
Bridge:
F C Am G
My first time, hard to explain
F C Am G
Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain
F C Am G
On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think
F C Am G C (hold for 1 measure, then proceed to instr.)
He's my first mistake...
Instrumental:
C C/B Am G
*the instrumental follows the same chords as the verses, though where the verses play
the chords for two measures, each chord in the intrumental is played for only 1 measure*
Verse 4:
C
Maybe you were all faster than me
We gave each other up so easily
C/B
(These) silly little wounds will never mend
I feel so far from where I've been...
CHORUS 3:
F Am G
(So I) go, and I will not be back here again
F Am G F
I'm gone as the day is fading, on
C Am G
White hou-ses
F Am G
(I) lied, wrote my injuries all the in dust
F Am G F
In my heart it's the five of us, in
C Am G
White hou-ses
F Am G
(And) you, maybe you'll remember me
F Am G F
What I gave is yours to keep, in
C Am G F F2
White hou-ses, in
C Am G F F2
White hou-ses, in
C Am G2 C
White hou-ses...

I think this song is about when Vanessa went to New York to dance at the Ballet Academy and meeting all the people there. The she meets a guy for whome she lost her virginity to. \\// peace

ok so Vanessa Carlton came and performed for my college last night. And she was telling us before she played this song that MTV censored it because it was about sex. And she was so pissed because they play all those rap/hip hop videos with women jiggling their booties, and they cant play a beautiful, mature song about sex. Well poo poo on mtv. It's an awsome song.

white houses. white symbolizes purity, innocence. this song essentially about a loss of innocence, something that you can never regain. "what i gave is yours to keep in white houses."

vanessa said that this song is not about her, rather a fictional story.

Yes.. it is about losing virginity. But more importantly this song is about losing herself in her relationships with four friends, one boy in particular. "I feel so far from where I've been so I go.. and I will not be back here again" She loses sight of herself and who she once was. Friendships are wonderful while they last... but sometimes when you are so close to someone and you both know it won't work out... "we were all in love and we all got hurt" you just have to leave those wounds open "these silly little wounds will never mend" and put them in the past "i lie, put my injuries all in the dust. In my heart it's the five of us" And yes, they will always be in her heart... but things will never be the same... Things always have to change. Her ideal (white houses) of falling in love and being with that person forever has not come true. And she gave away something that she can't take back "what I gave is yours to keep... in white houses"

Very nice song. I think its about how perfect she expected her first time to be, and it didnt turn out the way she thought.

This is definetly one of vanessa carltons best songs. I think she is singing about making some new friends yet one of them is more than a friend and she shares her secrets with all of them but in the end all 5 of them break up despite the pact they made...

THis song id fundamentally about Vanessa summers at the American Ballet Academy in NYC. It about the summer she fell in, got heartbroken for the first time and lost her virginity. It's about how she grew up way too fast that summer as it often happens. This is going to sound weird but i think the white houses are her teeth.. she doesn't say much and what she wants to say is just behind her teeth where you keep all of your secrets. It's her observations of herself and everyone as she looks back at that summer.

my little is a little nessa-head and it gets kinda annoying but i like some of her songs. this song the melody gets in the way of the lyrics. i just hope my little sister dosen't hear the lyrics too soon and ask what the 'a little rush of blood and oh a little bit of pain' is because yeah
