"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song is so beautiful and powerful. i totally feel how tracy does. i know what she means when "You gotta make a decision, Leave tonight or live and die this way." i live in a small town and i am going to get out of here as soon as I can. i think my life would be a waste and pointless if i didnt make somehting of my life and get the hell out of here. this song gives me the feeling of being spontanious and just leaving just like im going to do someday. im going to jump in my car and never look back.i also know what she means when she talks about her father and how he needs her help. she wants to leave but shes got reality holding her back.this song gives me hope

I always wonder....... the things you run from, are they really so bad that you should risk total unhappiness?

i'm only 13, and i know i might not know much about the world. i play acoustic guitar. tracy chapman is a wonderful influence on my music writing. i thrive on punk/ska/reggae music, but tracy chapman is a true exception to any type of music. her music somewhat reflects my life and a lot of peoples.

this songs'succes show that lots of people are touch by the subject. As usual she made an absolutly amazing melody, and as usual a sordid end,may be because life can be as beautifull as sad.could be interesting to ask to the autor the reason why all her songs are so sad,I guess it's because she is deep inside.I supose this story could be her parents story,a woman fall in love with a hoppless dreamer precisely because he made her dream but then she realises that he's not responsable ,then she choose to sacrifie her love to her children,it's interesting by the way ,cause she exactly does what her mother did (my mama went off and left him wanted more from life than he could give)it's the clash between ours dreams and the reality. this woman seems prisoner from her destiny, but there is one another important thing witch is the investing of this woman . We all are confronted one day to this engaging notion to make a gift of ourself cause there is no love without responsability ,it's impossible to be happy if you don't invest with all your heart .the woman is full of love but she is totally devoted to her children .So she make a decision . She knows perfectly her children and her will suffer from the absence of the father if she did it it's because she had no alternative . I don't believe they don't love each other i think the man is like a kid they don't live in the same word .May be the story tracy is telling has nothing to do with all we can imagining, the more important is that everyone can recognize his own story in her songs and share the emotion of the autor.

Love deeply and passionately. You may get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely. The woman in this song did that - she lived, loved, got hurt and now she is moving on to better things.

by nietzsche_66 on 06-07-2002 @ 01:30AM I always wonder....... the things you run from, are they really so bad that you should risk total unhappiness? Well to me it sounds like she was already living in total unhappiness.. her mother left her to take care of her alcoholic father, and to do so she had to quit school. That doesnt sound like much of a life.. it was a complete sacrifice of her future. She felt trapped & needed out. Anyway, this song is beautiful

I think Tracy Chapman's original version is better than Xiu Xiu's cover, but their cover is still very good. You can't beat the writer of the song, though. This is truly an amazing song. I and many others can relate with the subject matter. It's a very sad song. The line that gets me the most is, "I had a feelin' that I could be someone".
