Hi. This is my TAB of Tracy Chapman's 'Give Me One Reason'. This is a
great, yet very simple blues song. A previous posting showed the song in a
straight 12 bar blues progresson in E, and I posted a version exactly like
this one in G, however, the song is played in F#. A couple of people tipped
me on the fact that it's supposed to be in F#, so thanks! I have tabbed the
chords in plain majors, however, you can make each a 7th to add a bit of a
more bluesy sound.
The main riff (Fig. 1) is played throughout the entire song, verse,
chorus, solo, everything. The high strikes of the chords should be played
'up strokes' and the muted parts of the chords should be played with
'down strokes'. This is another part of the tab which I messed up a little
because I reversed the symbols on the Figure. Check the key again and match
it to Fig. 1. Speaking of the solo, I have not posted it, nor have I
posted the little fills between the different lines of the verse. I figured
that it is more fun to play your own fills, and add your own solo.
Improvisation is a big part of my playing, so I will only post what is in
the actual song.
Key (Tablature Explanation):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x = Muted String
/ = Slide Up
\ = Slide Down
v = Down Stroke
^ = Up Stroke
I've heard this song plenty of times before, and I always thought it was okay. It plays in the store I work at sometimes, and I always thought it was okay. Until recently. About a week ago I basically poured my heart out to this one girl, something I had never done before. She basically acted like I hadn't said anything. I asked her what I do from here, because I didn't know. She said she still wanted to be friends. I didn't believe her. I told her there was a difference between a friend and an acquaintance. Basically, I put the ball in her court as to whether or not she actually wants to be my friend. A couple days ago at work, it was really slow, so it was quiet. I was listening to the music they play, and this song came on. I bought it that night, and have been listening to it almost nonstop ever since. It's sad one way of thinking about it, but at the same time I feel like it's making me stronger, making me able to walk away. Short Version: Really good song.
This is a fantastic Tracy song. Doesn't it just make you wanna funk-out? Try listening to it without dancing, and you've got some serious willpower.
I've always had this scene in my mind when i hear this song: she's just poured her heart out to this guy, outlined how she wants things to be between them, and he just sits there, silent and watching her. she waits for a response, and gets none...so she turns around and walks off. she obviously doesn't want to leave, but why stick around for someone who can't even be arsed to show or say they give a damn?
I love this song. I can totally relate to the experiences it describes. It seems that the singer's boyfriend is inattentive, but she doesn't want to end the relationship if there's any chance he'll reciprocate her love. I can't help wondering hwo this song would be different if a man sang it.
I just recently heard this song. I was intoxicated by tracy's groove and tone. This song is kind of playful on the edge of reason. She's saying i'm gonna leave but if you can give me one good reason to stay i willl. She sings it wonderfully with soul and delight. I am addicted to this song.
This song reminds me of this one guy who had me totally whipped...and after awhile he took my presence for granite, so after so many lonely nights of crying and calling and calling i grew stronger and i told him...look babe if you can prove to me that you want me and need me, i'll stay but if not ima bizounce...which relates to "....Give me one reason to stay here - and I'll turn right back around Because I don't want leave you lonely But you got to make me change my mind..."
This is a great song, I'd like to say it's one of my favorite Tracy Chapman songs, but i really can't, since every single one of her songs is as good as the next. Besides Fast Car anyway.
I just added this song-- I'm surprised that it wasn't already here-- Given that it's one of her most famous. When this song first came out, I couldn't stand it! But then I heard it again about two years ago or so.. and I absolutely loved it! I don't know what happened. lol
