So Long Marianne
By Leoard Cohen
From The Lp.. Songs Of Leonard Cohen (1967)
Transcribed by Dan Nicholas
G Am
Come over to the window my little darling
C G
I'd like to try to read your palm
F C
I used to think I was some kind of gypsy boy
Em D D7
Before I let you take me home
G Em
Cho...Now so long Marianne it's time we began
D D7 G
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
G Am
Well you know that I love to live with you
C G
But you make me forget so very much
F C
I forget to pray for the angels
Em D D7
And then the angels forget to pray for us
Cho...
G Am
We met when we were almost young
C G
Deep in the green Lilac park
F C
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
Em D D7
As we went kneeling thru the dark
Cho...

| what a song, its full of strong emotions, its seems he regrets their break up and is wonder how she feels differently now then she did at the start of love, its very sad and pessimestic, but totally original and outstanding | |

| this song means a lot to me. i see it as a song celebrating the life he had with marianne and that he had happiness with her but his own problems led to the break up... it's a beautiful song. also, my name is marianne, and its strange to hear him singing my name! | |

| To me, this song is written from the stalker's point of view - she's changed her name again to escape him. He's convinced that she loves him and that she's hiding it (her hidden love). There are certainly parts of the song that don't work with my interpretation, and I doubt it's what Cohen had in mind, but it's what I think when I hear it. | |

| Still though, I think the Marianne he refers to in the song is Marianne Ihlens, his girlfriend and muse through the sixties. She is the woman pictured on the back of the cover to "Songs From A Room". They lived together for ten years on the greek island of Hydra. | |

| I learned to play this song. I've always seen it as a sad serenading song. Especially with the "come over to the window" part. It seems like him and Marianne are still friends, even though they are broken up and saying good bye. | |

| this is that song that i always wished he was singing to me no matter how sad or celebratory it was. it's the only song with my name (spelt my way too) in it that i appreciate. it definately hit a chord with me most recently when i was left by someone i cared too much for. sometimes i like to pretend he did write it for me knowing such a time would come...is that silly? | |

| @ mzquirk: Music is written for everyone, especially if the writer is a master like L. Cohen. So no, it isn't silly to feel as if the song was written for you. It sounded to me like he still loves her, but when he lives with her he realizes that it makes him neglect other things that he isn't ready to give up. | |
