"Ghost"
Howie Day

Tabbed by: Mose
Email: cmoser@uiuc.edu

-Howie Day is a singer/songwriter type who uses really cool effects to accompany
his acoustic guitar...he also has a flock-of-seagulls haircut -www.howieday.com
I haven't seen any of howie day's songs tabbed out so I figured I'd post mine

Tuning: standard

Howie uses this loop effects machine to create the really high notes you hear
(I saw him play it once on Kilborn...)
The part I've tabbed is just the chords he plays while singing...

Verse/Chorus:
Strum C#min, A (power chord version), and E
Listen to the song for the rhythm

e|---0---0---0-----------------------------------------0---2-----------------|
B|---5---0---0-----------------------------------------2---0-----------------|
G|---6---6---2-----------------------------------------2---2-----------------|
D|---6---7---2-----towards the end of the verse--------2---2-----------------|
A|---4---7---1----he plays this variation of the E:----1---1-----------------|
E|-------5-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Then the bridge goes:
"I just wanna taste love..."
e|---0---0---0---------------------------------------------------------------|
B|---5---0---0---------------------------------------------------------------|
G|---6---6---8---------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---6---7---9---------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---4---7---9---------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------5---7---------------------------------------------------------------|

End on E
===============================================================================
This is my first tab and I'm really proud of myself...

great song. i think the line "now i'm denied by the ghost of you" means "i'm denied freedom by the ghost of our relationship" meaning... i keep thinking about you.. blah blah.. i know there’s little use in crying it’s more wide awake and dying then i’m used to (i shouldn't cry. 2nd line basically saying i'm depressed) i thought we’d walk these streets together now i’m hoping that i’ll never have to meet you (self explanatory) step aside from all this anger and somewhere in between i can feel you (stop thinking about being angry for a second and in that moment i can feel the real you.. and what you really want) ask me should we try again i’m thinking no y’know, it’s not what i believe in it’s not what i believe in (he's saying "no" to trying again but he's also saying that "you know thats not what i really want" )

Has anyone looked at a more sexual side to this song? Almost a plot of him having his first experience and her only using him.proceeding to laugh at him. Only making him angy, yet he is so attached by the action that he wants to see her even though he hates her for wat she has done.

Picture a blind relationship, an internet relationship, something like Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail. That's the vibe I get from most of the song, mostly the lyrics "take yourself a photograph and laugh at me" then "I thought we'd walk these streets together, now I'm hoping that I'll never have to meet you" It's apparent that she is the one either reluctant to enter into it, or wants to break it off, or may even be leading him on maliciously ("and laugh at me...") and he is the one who can't let go.

I love the live version he does with the added "beams of light" thing at the end. Phenomenal. He's such a good, REAL (ie no lip singing), singer which just amazes me... his live shows are the best!

i'm still trying to figure this one out...i'm pretty sure its about a break up (which i am currently experiencing). "i thought we’d walk these streets together now i’m hoping that i’ll never have to meet you" i moved out to this city to be with her (we were across the state)...and we used to walk the streets together. anytime i go out now, i hope sometimes i do run into her, but know deep down i don't want to because i know it will just make it hurt that much more. "i, just wanna taste you, love" ...every night, i think about her (even though i try my damndest not to...laying in bed by myself, just want to taste her kiss/body again. denied by the ghost of her time and time again...no matter how hard i want to forget about her and move on...i can't :(

I like this song, being that it's Howie. On anyone else's record this song would definitely jump out at me and be great....but Howie's just SO good that this isn't one of my favorite's from him...It's too slow and there's no catchiness too it...I don't know, it doesn't grab me...maybe someday!

the real question is who hasnt this song applied to? most def. its a relationship ending, but its sounds like he misses her (or even this makes me think of a backstabbing bestfriend, personally :) but neways, he misses her and in moments of weakness secretly wants to be together again(notice how frail and high his voice is in the chours), but knows better when hes being realistic (like his voice is deeper than the chourous).

"I thought we’d walk these streets together. Now i’m hoping that i’ll never have to meet you. Step aside from all this anger, And somewhere in between I can feel you." I agree that this song is about a reltionship that ended. He had hoped it would be everlasting, but once it was over he was really hurt and never wants to see her again. He is so mad, yet he misses her.

i love howie...i heard about him at a band camp a couple years ago, and unfortunately, i couldn't make the concert...but i looked him up and got his "australia" cd...this has to be my favorite song off the cd...i think he's talking of a lost relationship...he wants it back, but then again he doesn't...and he's constantly haunted by the ghost of the relationship...it's like, he wants to be with her again (i wanna taste of love), and yet he doesn't want to see her anymore...his emotions are all confusing to him because he can't figure out exactly what he does want...i think it's about him trying to figure things out...to stay or to move on? that is the question...and if he moves on, can he bear it? or will he constantly be running into the ghost of her?

i definitly agree with all of ur interpretations, but i think rather than someone ending a relationship with him, he is the one breaking it off. maybe it wasnt working for whatever reason, and he is "so resistant to this type of thinking" aka problems in a relationship.. he still wants to "taste her love" and be with her, but there is something not right with the relationship and he cant stay in it. the photograph i think would leave the girl something to remember him by, and maybe the girl would be laughing bc he couldnt handle a relationship thats wasnt perfect. also, in terms of the "Ghost" idea... Maybe this "Ghost" is from a past relationship.... reminding him of how this love is supposed to be. when this new relationship is not the same, he cant deal..... just an idea!!

I don't know exactly what its all about, but you guys have nailed it pretty close, I'd say. I saw Howie a couple of days ago in Austin at the Austin City Limits Music Festival... he was amazing, so talented. He was very passionate and into it, even though it was 100 degrees and everyone was staring into the sun. My favorite Howie song by far...

I think its about a break up, and one person feels that they are completely over the other, until they see them again or are reminded of them and the "ghost" of what they had with the other person hits them.

I never ever understood this song, but then something happened and it all came together. You have to understand, to understand. It's about indecision and confusion and all that shitty stuff. 1 2 Next

I agree that the relationship ended. I think she broke it off with him because she didn't see him for all he was ("you take yourself a photograph and laugh at me"). He thought they'd be together for a while, but she obviosuly really hurt him ("step aside from all this anger"). I am not sure if she wants to get back with him, or if he just means he wouldn't if she tried ("ask me should we try again... it's not what i believe in"). The looping on this song is unbelievable. It's one of my favorite songs to see live... especially when he goes into Beams of Light at the end.

i agree w/ all of u dat r here... it really, really applies to to u... when sumthing doesn't work out, and u HAV to leave it u no... dat's da pain... cuz da moment u leave it, ur overwhelmed by da void... u no... u feel sooo empty... it's a jaded realization dat, well, da end has cum and by referring to NETHING as a 'ghost' u admit it's dead... rite? the two most important lines in dis whole song are: "alive from the first, now i'm denied by the ghost of u" and "no, i wanna taste you, love"..."no i wanna taste of you"... u no? like, he's never tasted it... and dis ghost is jus anotha reminder of it... gawd, dis song IS TOOO GOOD! tc y'all... knid05...

it's about how a relationship is broken off by the girl, and he suffers, but she wants him back, yet he's ready to move on. she keeps trying to do things to get him back, and although he does feel it, he's trying his hardest to break away from the relationship completely.

I heard that this is going to be Howie's first single released from Australia. I't such a bad ass song, and I'm hoping he'll play it when I see him in Atlanta this Thursday. I'm thinking it's about a relationship that is over, and the memories of what was once haunt you now. "ask me should we try again i’m thinking no y’know, it’s not what i believe in it’s not what i believe in" that line just tells you that sometimes what you want is not what you really need, so you have to make the right decision. All in all it's one of his best songs, I think
