| To quote John Denver himself, ""Annie's Song" is my most popular song around the world, if not the most famous. It was written after we had been through a particularly difficult time and had come together again, in many ways closer then ever before. We really felt together and much closer from the experiences we'd been through. One day I was skiing, and I'd just finished a run that was totally exhilarating. I skied right down to the lift, got on the chair, and was off and up the mountains again, my thighs burning and still in the process of catching my breath. I looked out at the mountains I love, and the Colorado sky was a blue color you can only see from this altitude-my favorite color, I might add. The deep green of the trees against the white of the snow, the colorful outfits the people were wearing, the sounds if life as it goes over each tower, and birds singing, and laughter, and the smell of the clean, fresh air out there in the wilderness-all those things were going through my mind and it was all beautiful. It filled me completely. “I began thinking about other things that are like that for me, and my first thought was of the woman I had fallen in love with again, and how she filled me so completely. Then I stared thinking of other things-things in nature. And in the ten minutes it takes to go from the bottom of Bell Mountain lift to the top, I had written “Annie’s Song.” I had the melody in my head, and I knew the chords on the guitar. I skied down to the bottom, of the hill, raced home, picked up my guitar, and played it. Noel Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary said sometimes he didn’t feel so much like the writer, but rather the instrument of that which wants to be written. That’s what this felt like to me. “Annie’s Song” is a song for all lovers and, in its deepest sense, a prayer to the love in us all.” | |

| This song, like many others of Denver's, is a masterpiece. My parents were actually married to this song, over 25 years ago, and I've pretty much grown up on Denver's music. It's a shame his life was cut short. He's definitely one of my favorite artists of all time. | |

| Now this is what you call a love song! Simple and to the point, few songs can match it. Denver's genius can never be doubted because of this. | |

| It actually took the amazing Vienna Teng to bring this song to my attention in the form of her live cover, though now that she has, I'm not sure a finer love song has ever been written. There's a certain sexual aspect to that last line of the verse that somehow seems to work better when it's sung by a woman, but, er, anyway. Thanks, John. | |

| I had never heard of John Denver before until someone put this this song on at the end of a rather mellow party. He told me: Listen to this; it's simply a man and his guitar.. I remember the simple lyrics and the beautiful tune cutting through all the noise and expressing this mans love and devotion in a clearer way than I had ever heard before. I just began to cry outright, there was no stopping it; this was, and still is, one of the most clear and tender lovesongs I have ever heard.. | |

| supporters of sheffield united sing their own words to this tune. you fill up my senses like a gallon of magnet like a packet of woodbines like a good pinch of snuff like a night out in sheffield like a greasy chip butty oh sheffield united come thrill me again the "greasy chip butty song" as it is known, is all about the things that fill up your senses. magnet is beer, woodbines are cigarettes, snuff should be self explanatory. greasy chip butties are a very british mean, essentially a thick franch fries sandwich. incredibly unhealthy, but it makes you feel good, just like sheffield united. just like all the things that annie does for john, the things in this chant do for united fans. | |

| The lyrics above are wrong. He says let me give my life TO you, not FOR you. There is a huge difference. He isn't talking about laying down and dying for her (although he probably would have.) The ultimate gift he can give to her is himself, and she can do with him what she wants. He believes he is a better person with her. This guy was a nature lover. The only way he could express his love for his wife Annie was to liken it to the beautiful things in nature. Possibly one of the most romantic songs ever written. This is the lullaby I sing to my baby son. This and Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel. | |
