Two brothers lyin dead in Coffeeville.

Two voices call to you from where they stood,
A C G
"Lay down your lawbooks now, they're no damn good."
Better keep on movin, Doolin-Dalton
Till your shadow sets you free.

***
from DOOLIN-DALTON/DESPERADO(REPRISE):
Well the stage was set, the sun was sinkin lowdown.
As they came to town to face another showdown.
The lawmen cleared the people from the street.
All you bloodthirsty bystanders, will you try to find a seat?
Watchin Doolin, Doolin-Dalton.
Bigh or low, it's all the same.
Easy money, faithless women.
You will never kill the pain.
Go down little doolin, don't you wonder why.
Sooner or later we all have to die.
Sooner or later, that's a stone cold fact.
Four men ride out and only three ride back.

It's based on the Doolin-Dalton gang. Bill Doolin and Will Dalton were notorious outlaws. When Doolin hooked up with the Dalton brothers, they were a major threath. They did rob banks in Coffeyville, where as I recall a few of the Dalton brothers got killed in the process. It's a great story (the entire Desperado album) if you dig deep into it and the best Eagles album (That's Eagles, not THE EAGLES you sillybuns) http://www.gunslinger.com/doolin.html

Law books ain't no help in a lawless land, buckaroo... If they ever made a movie of Blood Meridian, this would be a perfect song for the credits.

i cant work out if doolin & dalton are friends or trying to kill each other? "go down bill dalton it must be gods will" does that mean he's been shot or what?

I agree with hairychester, it's an awesome album that tells a great story. I could see a really good movie being made out of the Desperado album. 1
