| especially if thinking about the song politically (though granted it does sound a lot like a love song), could it have anyhing to do with WWI? because the US was referred to as "johnny-come-lately"s (i'm pretty sure i'm thinking of the correct war) due to a late appearance in the fighting of the war. | |

| The Eagles are all about the true meaning of their songs - most of the time well hidden from the obvious. All of the songs in Hotel California had a political overtone. Life in the Fast Lane is about being elected, then leaving as President of the US. This about it like this: "New Kid in Town" = President "the street" = Washington, DC the female character = the US "which side you're on" = Democrat or Republican When you hear this song with those thoughts in mind, you get the clearer meaning of what most people think is just a love song....... | |

| This song was about the Eagles realizing that fame is fleeting and tried to relate it to a love relationship. The "she " refers to the fickle fan. With this album the Eagles made a large shift away from the Country Western sound that was waining at that time. I think Burce Springstein wasa clear sign to them that "they will never forget you till someboy new comes allong" And I think it was fitting that New Kid in Town was the only song on the Album with that Country sound to it. | |

| this song is about a guy who is in a relation with a girl. at first its all great and everyone thinks their the cutest couple. but he starts feeling trapped "But after awhile, you're lookin' the other way It's those restless hearts that never mend after a while people start to catch on and shun him away from their lives. suddenly the woman he loves is with another man when he thought she would always love him just another new kid in town | |

| I don't see the politics thing at all. In the book "Take it to the Limit" some of the truth behind this tune is revealed. The Eagles were the hottest thing in LA and rising fast until the end of '75. That was when Bruce Springsteen exploded with "Born to Run." He was their opposite. THe Boss sang from the gut and harmony was not what he did. He sang raw songs about city and urban life and love. He was the new hottest thing out there. When the "concept" for "Hotel California" came up this song naturally flowed from their feelings of being cast off by "the New Kid in Town." Now this album put the Eagles back up and in the forefront but they wrote about the California lifestyle of the mid 70's and what the experienced and knew was that anyone can quickly be cast off when the New Kid came around. | |

| I don't think this song has anything to do with politics, and neither does most of Hotel California. after all, the title track is an indictment of the state hollywood was in at the time that it was written. I think this song is about how people can often let being hot shit get in the way of their true self, and then the letdown when they realize that the people who were drawn to them when they were popular are only interested in the popularity itself. It would make sense as a sister track to Hotel California, and would explain why they are together on the album...all in all, one of my fav Eagles tracks | |

| I really like the line, "They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along." Kind of an unexpected twist, almost some sort of paradox. I never thought of it being political. Whether or not it was written to be that, I can see how it could be interpreted that way. Interesting. | |

| It works as a general song of how everything is great and wonderful when it's new--a girlfriend, popularity, the Eagles' career in the music biz, etc.--but the novelty wears off ("But after awhile, you're lookin' the other way/It's those restless hearts that never mend"), things lose their lustre. Next thing you know, everyone is all over the Next Big Thing and here you are, kicked to the curb and broken-hearted/alone/without a record company while the your lover/your "friends"/the record buying public fawn over the new thing. This song cracks me up. The lyrics are cheesy ("everybody's walkin' like the new kid in town"), and they keep bumping the key up after every other verse, as if to say "This is supposed to be EMOTIONAL and TOUCHING! Are you feeling EMOTIONAL and TOUCHED yet? No? Fine, we'll boost it another key! For chrissake, Start crying in your beer already!" 1 | |

| mmkay. i'ma try this here. they're referring to life, when a new, bright face or idea comes around, and everyone drops what they're doing to ooh and ahh over it... but they point out that once the newness wears off, it's over. 'johnny come lately' is a 'john doe' type of thing, the new person who 'comes around'. 'will she still love you when you're not around?' they're talking about fleeting romance, where they don't really know each other too well, but they just need someone to hold, a here-and-now type of thing. haven't we all been in this type of situation? i know i have... bunch of times. | |

| I have no idea whether the song has to do with their leaving the country western sound, but it is a good hypothosis. To me, it equates to my trip to vietnam when I first went there, I was the new kid in town, everyone that I met thought the most of me, the second time i went there, I brought my friend with me, suddenly he was the new kid in town, everyone thought the best of him, and I was kind of in the background. no animosity, just an inside feeling that this song portays in my life so well | |

| The song is about the record business....you all are getting too deep here! It tells the story of fame and failure and knowing them for the imposters that they are. | |
