this song is amazing its pretty complicated to get the full definition out of it but this is what i think it means take it to the limit( go for the girl one more time) but it also deals with i dont care how many times i get turned down i will always go for the girl because eventually their will be that one girl

This song's music, sounds very similar to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me By Now" song. But this song is pretty good. 1

The “Take it to the limit” lyric refers to living life to it’s fullest (e.g. knowing what is important and aiming towards that limit). And the other lyrics describe not doing that. The lyrics are a little confusing because of their different use of the word “you/you’re” in the line “would you still be mine” vs. its use in the next stanza that starts “And when you’re looking for your freedom”. The line “will you still be mine”, he’s actually talking to a significant other. In the next stanza, it is a generic “you”. Like when one says “you know when you close you’re eyes, it gets dark.”… Meaning – when anyone closes their eyes. So when he says “And when you’re looking for your freedom” – he’s talking about himself, and others in the same situation; and those who keep doing it don’t seem to better their situation – as they keep "coming back for more.” Heck – you could interpret this song as the author trying to find God – “nothing to believe in … [so] show me a sign [so I can] take it to the limit (live life to its fullest, perhaps with God).” But I don’t think it is specifically talking about God. It’s talking about finding what’s important (be it God, true love, meaningful work, or whatever). I could picture a charismatic preacher doing a sermon using this song as a basis. Of course we all know what happened when he finally did get on that highway and was shown the sign. As I recall, it was a dark desert highway… and the sign said “Hotel California.” Last I heard, even though he keeps checking out, they won’t let him leave. Must have chosen the wrong road.

It's a great song, but the Etta James cover is superior. Take my word for it. The lyrics are phenomenal, in the sort of late-night road tripping style that is quintessential Eagles.

I've argued with the boyfriend about this cuz it's him, lol. Two people exist in this song, the speaker "i" and the woman who he refers to as "you." The words "but" and "so" are really important to interpret the meaning of "take it to the limit" because that phrase could mean running away from something or going down in glory. The contrast of "but" with his running around and his broken dreams shows that the running has not gotten him what he really wants. "SO" in other words, "therefore" he'll try going full throttle down the road again. The road is a metaphor for love/relationship (or whatever emotional risk you'd like to substitute although the song is about lost potential love). Yes, he's spent his time making money, and his love "making time," in other words, getting loveless sex which he regrets. It's time to go full throttle with love, take it to the limit because he's ready to get to the finish line or crash and burn. All he needs is that sign...

i agree completely with A Page06. it's about knowing what's important in life, holding onto it, and having the best time with it while you can. also, willard is right too by enjoying life to the full which also ties in with A Page06. you have to know what's best in life before enjoying life to the fullest. best song ever! eagles rock!

Hillary Clinton has this song on her iPod, according to a recent article in the New York Post. What does this say about her? Perhaps this song represents her some sort of a dreamer - "You know I've always been a dreamer" - with ambition for the White House?

The cover of this track by Suzzy Boggus is also cool. I guess the meaning of this song is similar to that of "Desperado." Nothing is ever good enough.

I have to disagree, I would say the song is more about finding the good thing in life and not letting false senses of freedom and money deter you from real love and precious time... More or less, value what you have and enjoy it while you can.
