I think the song is actually about his mother. Both she and E's sister passed away when E started writing this album. The only reason I say it's about his mother and not his sister is the line "break your mothers heart". Also, E's sister was a huge part of how he got into music, so I would think he would use some type of musical object as a gift from her.

Well, I'm not clear on this for some reason, but maybe it's possible that the song *is* about his sister, and the line "break your mother's heart" is actually a reference to his sister killing herself, and his mother being heartbroken. Well, wouldn't you be?

one of the cool things about eels is how they combine quite upbeat tunes with meaningful (and usually quite emotional) lyrics. without listening to the lyrics it sounds reasonably cheerful but when you listen to what he's saying it's really quite creepy. About a watch that his sister gave him for christmas before she died. brilliant. thats what i think anyways...
