| Such a nice, slow song. Great video also. I think it's about a relationship about to end, the guy is asking the girl what went wrong. | |

| I always thought Elbow were shit but I love this song suddenly. It is quite gritty, lyrically, even though it sounds very gentle and unsevere. | |

| my interpretation of the song is the guy finally telling the girl how much she means to him. i can imagine him having the feelings built up for ages, then she asks him "what's up", and all this comes out. "all my time is yours, my twisted heart is yours..." he's infatuated by her. "shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments" is how in the past he would have accidentally let his guard down and momentarily made it obvious how he didnt just see her as a friend. the lines "were you crushed" "did i rush you" and "not to rush you" all show his nervousness in finally telling her the truth. either way, whatever. fantastic song! 1 | |

| I think it's about a relationship that went too fast and fell apart. Like, they found out about each other more than they wanted to know. "The shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments Until I fold them up and leave All yours" Getting very close too fast and then ending it abruptly. "show your scars, not to rush you" talking about the things that have hurt her in the past, asking too much too soon. "And all the things I never talk about Are spilling with the gin Test how tough you are" getting drunk and talking about the past, things he wouldn't normally disclose, things that has hurt him, that might hurt her, and whether or not she can take to hear it. That's my initial interpretation at least, might not be what was intended to be heard but that's how I saw it. | |

| Where do you get that interpretation? The only evidence of it I see is in the first two lines and the "gin" segment, but nowhere else... | |

| No, it's not about a breakup. Somehow all song interpretations fall to 2 same cliches: its about broken romance or about suicide. Don't people think artist may have a bigger scope of vision, ideas? *sigh* It's about the feeling you get at the start of relationships, especially when you have burned from them before. As you are happy and want to give all your best to her/him, at same time you are worried that you rush to much with it and lose the other person through it. And yes, it's a very lovely song and again I just love the musical structures that they weave, the touch Peter Gabriel's voice in Guy Garvey's vocals and the lyrics are always top-notch! Long live the Elbow :) | |
