Leaders Of The Free World Tabs:

  1. Forget Myself
  2. Leaders Of The Free World »
This is just a really simple version of this excellent song. But it sounds good to me, so here you go.
Leaders of the Free World - Elbow
Tabbed by Dave Anderson
Standard tuning - EADGBE
Intro - Em B Am C
(C) Em
I'm sick of working for a living
B
I'm just ticking off the days till I die
Am
Oh, I miss you Louise, yeah...
C
And the sickest little pleasures keep me going in between pulling teeth
Em
Oh periscope up
B
I've been looking for a ladder
Am
I need to see the commander in chief
C
And remind him what was passed onto me
Em
Your mum don't sleep!
B
And the friends you keep!
Am Em
I didn't raise a thief!
B
I didn't raise a thief!
Am
But the leaders of the free world
G B
Are just little boys throwing stones
Am
And it's easy to ignore
G B
Till they're knocking on the door of your homes
(Solo - Em B Am C)
Em
My thinking isn't driven
B
But the music always gives me a lift
Am
I'm so easy to please, yeah
C
But I think we dropped the baton like the 60's didn't happen, oh no!
Em
Oh periscope up
B
Should be looking for a ladder
Am
I need to see the commander in chief

Your mum don't sleep!
B
And the friends you keep!
Am Em
I didn't raise a thief!
B
I didn't raise a thief!
Am
But the leaders of the free world

Passing the gun from father to feckless son

We're climbing a landslide where only the good die young

Passing the gun from father to feckless son

I think the "Passing the gun from Father to Feckless son" is in reference to Bush Sr and Bush Jr.... terrorists in their own rights. 1

i think the 'i miss you louise' line is part of the whole 'periscope up' submarine analogy....like someone he's had to leave behind for war....that's all i could think of....anyway, this song totally epitomises the way i feel about the people who control the world.

So I've always read the "your mum don't sleep" line as being from the viewpoint of England. Two hundred years on, England feels the need to talk some sense into the colonies. And I second the comment about Louise... I don't know what that's in reference to, but I'd love to know.

Any idea what the line "I miss you Louise" is in reference to? Possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.

Oh and the first of the last two lines "Passing the gun from father to feckless son" was probably taken from the little postlude of "Fugitive Hotel"

dur, clearly another song against Bush. Though I think this time, Guy wants to directly tell him what he's doing wrong

Yeah... I'm not against Bush but I love this song even though I don't agree with the main gist of it... but the music, everything is genius. When I heard 'snowball' on Help! A Day in the Life charity CD, I had to listen to more of Elbow and heard this song, and now I'm hooked.
