The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes by ELVIS COSTELLO
Intro
E B E B E
E G#m
Oh I used to be disgusted, and now I try to be amused.
E7
But since their wings have got rusted,
A B E
you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
A E
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
A E
that's when I knew that I could not refuse.
B A B A E
And I won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
A B E
Oh, I was watching while you're dancing away.
B A E
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway.
A B E
How come everybody wants to be your friend?
G#m B
You know that it still hurts me just to say it.
E
Oh, I know that she's disgusted (oh why's that)
G#m
Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad)
A
She gets tired of the lust, (oh I'm so sad)
B
but it's so hard to refuse.
A
How can you say that I'm too old,
E B A E
when the angels have stolen my red shoes.
A B E
Oh, I said "I'm so happy, I could die."
B A E
She said "Drop dead," then left with another guy.
A B E
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
G#m B
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.
A E A E
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes Red shoes, the angels
want to
wear my red (A)shoes (and so on)

| As I heard the song it swept me off my feet - and that's all because of the lyrics shining out from the basic musical background. By repetition and seemingly meaningless enumeration Costello creates the air of terminal and fatal passion and intense sadness which could never be found in those cheap cheesy pieces. It moved me deeply. It will surely make me cry at some point, and if some guy dedicates it to me - ah well, that'll be an unfair battle! :) | |

| It's an "Unwelcome Love" song, which are often better than love songs, especially when done by EC. This character is so tortured, it's pitiful. "The Comedians" also by EC is comparable. | |

| this is my favourite elvis costello song by far! im a huge fiona apple fan, so obviously i loved her cover version, but just the song itself is awsome. I think the way it's written.. and how the words really out-shine the music.. gets the point across so strongly, you hear it and its like this guy is right infront of you just spouting out all this heart-break, the structure of it, everything! its great, but yeah..no love song.. i'd say it's more a psycho-stalker song. 1 | |

| It was a splendid performance by Fiona. She seemed so taken by the power of the song that she almost looked a bit afraid. Like: "Will I survive this?" She did survive it and did it very well. The only time I thought "Oooh no, too bad" was the part when the Me of the song imitates the new lover saying I want you, "and you were fool enough to love it when he said: "Iiii waaaant yooouu"". Itīs so great how EC makes it seem like the most stupid, untalented thing to say, ever, when it comes from the lips of this clown, but then he says it himself like a hunded times in the song. I donīt think Fiona seemed to understand that part of it being a quote, and therefor she didnīt have that mocking, sarcastic tone in her voice as she sang that line. I agree with those of you who hear a betrayed man in the song. I donīt know anything about the details of ECīs lovelife, and I donīt care. This song is bigger than that. I think you could apply the term cuckold to the Me of the song, cause eventhough he is being cheated on, and suffering from this, he also likes parts of it, wanting to know the most painful details, wanting to hear that her new lover is actually better in bed than he is. Oh, I could go on and on forever about this song, but Iīll leave it at that. | |

| The live version is the definitive version. I saw him when he toured with the Imposters, and holy crap. So passionate. Like he was making love to his song onstage. It left me breathless, literally; I felt like I should've been smoking a cigarette after that or something :) It's such a creepy song, but the intensity makes it sexy, which in turn makes it creepier. | |

| I knew this song when I watched the film "I want you" of director Michael Winterbottom. It is an incredible film. Film and song are now united for me, I cannot understand one without the other. Highly recommended! | |

| Er. Y'all do realise that this song is about a guy who is dangerously obsessed with his ex, possibly murderously so, probably stalking her, and generally Seriously Messed Up, right? It's definitely one of EC's best songs, beautifully produced and played on the album, and a great piece of songwriting. But a love song it is not. | |

| This song is so powerful. It is single-handedly responsible for turning me into a big Elvis fan. I always liked his stuff before, but this song sent me into a big Elvis phase. Can't wait to see him here next month!! All of his stuff is just awesome. He may be the originator of "emo". | |

| Wrong! This song is not about a stalker, nor is it a love song in the traditional sense. It is someone who is talking to himself after his wife or girlfriend cheated on him. He is mad not only because she had the affair, but that he loves her so much he still "wants her" and towards the end of the song he accepts the affair and forgives her. | |

| If you've ever been cheated on by someone that you care about, this song will hit you like a freight train. Before looking up any of the facts, I knew Costello must have been cheated on by someone he cared about immensely. You can't write a song like this without experiencing it. It's just so real. So accurate. Everything is going great, like at the beginning of the song and then the truth comes out and you're left wondering "Wow, did you just forget to mention it?" Then, although your logical side tells you to not hurt yourself with the details, some other part of you wants nothing more than to hear each and every horrible detail. You want to know if she liked it. You want to know if he did the things you do to her. Then there's this overpowering feeling of wanting her. Of wanting to be with her......to reclaim what is yours? It's a strange and mixed emotion that is hard to explain, like so many other human emotions. And forgiving her.....the hardest thing you'll ever do. Because you will never entirely forgive her. No matter how much time passes and how faded the memory becomes, every once in a while it will creep back up like a disease and hurt you all over again. From time to time a musician takes complicated emotions and encapsulates them in their entirety into a song. Costello took the fear, jealousy, hatred, depression, helplessness, sadness, and anger of being cheated on and did exactly that with this song. | |

| This is such a sexy sexy song. Last night was the first time I heard it, and I was trying to go to sleep... My room mate was playing this cd, and when this song came on I knew sleep was not in my future. Honestly, how can someone listen to this song and not start getting a little hot under the collar? uh! It's so.. I can't even find a word to perfectly describe it, I can only make many gestures and movements. So good.. so good... | |
