Come back to what you know,
Bm G Em
Take everything, real slow,

I wanna lose you but I can't,

Let you go.

Before you interfere,
Bm G Em
Let me make it loud and clear,
Bm D
that you got no more to prove.
G
I'm the fool.
[bridge]
Bm Em
So take it easy, on yourself,
C G
There's nothing new about, declaring how you felt.
Em
I'll never let you down,
C D G
Or ever feel the way that I've been fearing now.
[chorus]
G Em D
Coming back to what you know won't mean a thing.
C G
Everything that you've done keeps you from me.
Em
Now I know that I need more time,
D C G
Come back and let me see your eye.
Em D
I'm coming back to what you know,
C G
Cos I know that I need it now it's gone.
Em
Now I know that I need more time,
D G
Come back and let me see your eye.
G
So hang on to what you've got,
G
keep it safe.
C
Hang on to what you've got,
G Em
keep it safe from harm.
D
You'll find.
C G D
There's nothing new that we can't leave behind.
[2nd verse]
Come back to what you know,
Take everything, real slow,
I wanna lose you but I got,
Far too high.
To let go,
Now the demon in me knows,
What I knew so long ago.
[chorus]
Coming back to what you know won't mean a thing.
Everything that you've done keeps you from me.
Now I know that I need more time,
Come back and let me see your eye.
I'm coming back to what you know,
Cos I know that I need it now it's gone.
Now I know that I need more time,
Come back and let me see your eye.
So hang on to what you've got,
keep it safe.
Hang on to what you've got,
keep it safe from harm.
We got time.
We got time.
[outro - same chords as verse]
Come back to what you know,
Take everything, real slow,
I tried to lose you,
But I got,
far too close.

this song feels like my life. but so do most melancholy-sounding love songs right now. seriously though, i think this song is about a relationship that didn't work out, but the singer isn't willing to let go. he's sticking around until he knows there is no chance. 1

Indeed it is. I've never actually had a serious relationship, let alone got back with one. But remember when, after a fight with a friend and not talking to him for months, we finally were forced into the situation where we had to go home from college together on a train. We started talking, and eventually acknowledged the fact that we were getting on and didn't feel opressed by each other anymore, just refreshed that we could talk again. I got home and put this on my CD player. The rest as they say, is history. Shaun 1

The song for me referrs to him being suspended in time/space by the potential for a second chance at a failed relationship. The "and I wanna know, when you see things close enlarge they dissapear"(misread in the lyrics on this site) could be referring to him knowing the mystery behind the magic of happiness, showing it to be a rouse, misled set of feelings, a trick or just something which only seemed like magic. The truth shall set you free but if you've know where to go from that truth you may well feel suspended, rejected and beg to be taken back. At least you have an identity, a role a purpose. Here I don't think the singer has regained any of those things. The definite realisation of the relationship being finished has not come to him yet. He can come down when this realisation is shown to him either in the form of her being with someone else, "... alone or someone new, but I can't come down til you do". The initial suspension he feels "..I can't come down" is an obvious acknowledgement that he initially acknowledged the end, but the defence mechanism of him running and staying in suspension implies that he has not fully acknowledged it, or that he refuses to live with the acknowledgement.
