I think he's talking about himself here, not a nightmare. "Theres a place that ive found as far as i can see this place lies within the depths of my dreams " when you dream, you're dreams tell you things you only know in your subconscious mind, trying to bring it to your attention. "I walk with shadows! you've got to find a better way" maybe meaning he has to find a better way of figuring himself out, rather than sleeping? and "destroy the guillotine before he does" ack. I had such a good explination for what he's talking about but then my dumb ass forgot it. the man with an axe could possibly be himself, and maybe he fears finding who he really is I'm probably way off, but personally, I like to believe songs have a deeper meaning than just whats on the surface. I have a tendency of looking into things too much but this song is pretty tight.

It's about betrayal so in my opinion i think its best to look at it much like this. "never fall asleep! you wont wake up" -Never believe in dreams coming true, blindly living in bliss will hurt more when it ends. "destroy the guillotine! before he does" -know when to end the dream and cut everyones chances of hurting you before they have that chance. After that the rest is self explanatory. Hiding in the shadows from the rest of the world which is referred to as the "gallows" that seem to be out to get him. So hes avoiding being hurt by anyone ever again.

When he says "I walk with shadows", he means he walks with demons, demons are shadows :|

whats funny is that someone actually said that Fall Out Boy rocked hard. fall out boy does not rock hard. fall out boy barely manages rock, and does so poorly.

i see the whole "horror story" concept. but i just had to say my favorite part of the song: "never fall asleep! you wont wake up destroy the guillotine! before he does" I LOVE THAT PART. this band rocks harder than yours ever will. but not harder than fall out boy, at the drive in, and haste the day, but thats another story for another day.

This one reminds me of edgar allen poe. I get where the execution thing is coming from, but i guess i just like the whole horror-story or nightmare thing better. *shrug*

The nightmare theory makes sense to me. Listening to the line "Never fall asleep, you won't wake up!" sounds like if he fell asleep, they'd kill him, hence him not waking up.

I have a feeling that the lyrics are about someone who's about to be executed. the line, "destroy the guillotine! before he does" I think it's about making the person unable to be killed and the line "hiding from the gallows, they keep me safe and sound!" is like him saying, im trying not to die. I may be wrong, but that was my guess. the horror story fits, im not sure about the ghost figure, it's a good idea and I'm not here to judge.

ok all I know it the guitar freaking SHREDS!!! lol hahaha such a BA song I love it jam out to it in my car I dont think it has a true meaning like most songs and like ETF says their songs are meant to appeal to sooo many people they want to get their music out to the masses and hope it makes people feel it so this song I this is vague for a reason so that peopel can come up with their own meanings let them face their own nightmares their own guillotines and such well thats my thoughts...

One of my favorite songs by them. Hmm, I saw them April 11. They played a great show, and the whole time Ronnie's butt was hanging out of his jeans because they were so tight!

i first heard this song on my boyfriend's myspace. this may be totally wrong, but maybe this is inspired by a nightmare. "never fall asleep! you wont wake up" i just think that its implying that he had a nightmare, and realized that life is morbidly similar. the horror story theme is apparent though. that's obvious. god i love this song..

I think it's simple, actually. I think it's basically just him telling a story. Just a fictional semi-horror story of a ghost-like figure.

Wow I didn't see it before but it can also been seen like this as well. "Never fall asleep! you won't wake up" Never stop looking over your back or feeling completely relaxed, they'll get you when you are. "destroy the guillotine! before he does" Cut him/them off before he/them has the chance of using the guillotine against you. Something along those lines
