Come to My Window
-- Melissa Etheridge
Chorus
G C D
Come to my window
G C D
Crawl inside, wait by the light of the moon
G C D
Come to my window
G C D
I'll be home soon.
C G D
C G
I could dial the numbers
D
Just to listen to your breath
C G
I would stand inside my hell
D
And hold the hand of death
C G
You don't know how far I'd go
D
Just to ease this precious ache
C G
You don't know how much I'd give
D
Or how much I can take
Em C D
Just to reach you
Em C D
Just to reach you
Em C D
Oh to reach you
Chorus
Keeping my eyes open
I can not afford to sleep
Giving away promises
I know that I can't keep
Nothing fills the blackness
That has seeped into my chest
I need you in my blood
I am foresaking all the rest
Just to reach you
Just to reach you
Oh to reach you
Chorus
Em
I don't know what they think
C
I don't care what they say
Am D
What do they know about this love anyway
Chorus

| Melissa has actually said several times that this song isn't about love. I don't understand what else it could be about- perhaps how badly she wanted fame at that point. But, from her autobiography, she wrote this song when she was in a repeat cycle of failed polygamous relationships, with a lover who was never quite as emotional as she was, so maybe she was wanting her to join her in that place. | |

| theres really no hidden meaning to this song. its prety obvious. she has fallen deeply in love with somebody that is really not accepted my some people. thats how i take the whole some to my window thing. crawl inside/ wait by the light of the moon is kinda like she has to kinda kepp this a secret. but then i dont care what they think/ i dont care what they say/ what do they abou this love anyway. is talking about the fact that she is involved in a lesbain relationship | |

| I think the "I don't care what they think / I don't care what they say" alludes to the fear about what other people will think about a Lesbian relationship, coming from Etheridge - although, not knowing the identity of the songwriter, it could mean anything else entirely. The rest of the lyrics are universal and can apply to any relationship. The song is about wanting your lover so bad, wanting him now, but perhaps it shows a relationship that is not out in the open. | |

| in her autobiography she tells the story behind this song. she was on tour oversees away from her partner. she was trying her hardest to keep their relationship intact but julie was slipping and melissa could feel it. "i would dial the numbers just to listen to your breath" they would be on the phone for hours without saying a word, but listening to julie's breath let her know that she still was holding on. she said she wrote this song for julie as a "hey wait for me to finish doing my thing and then we can do our thing" and said that julie never liked the song. also she claims that this song isn;t about love, it's about desperatly trying to save a love that is inevitably crumbling. check our her autobiography, it talks all about it. | |
