Evanescence-Missing Transcribed by Fernakas 6.12.2004

[Dm Am/D Dm Bb-5/D]
Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
Maybe someday you'll look up
And barely concious you'll say to no one
[Bbsus2-5 Bb]Isn't some[Asus4]thing missing

[Dm Am/D Dm Gm]
You won't cry for my absence, I know
You forgot me long ago
Am I that unimportant?
Am I so insignificant?
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[Asus4]thing missing
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[A7/C#]one missing me?

[Dm]Even though I'm the [C/E]sacri[F]fice
[Gm]You won't [Bb]try for [C]me, not [Dm]now
Though I'd [C/E]die to [F]know you loved [Gm]me
I'm all a[Asus4]lone
[Bbsus2 Bb]Isn't some[Asus4]one missing me?

[Dm Am/D Dm Bb-5/D]
[Dm Am/D Dm Gm]
Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
I know what you do to yourself
I breathe deep and cry out
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[A7]thing missing
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[A7/C#]one missing me?

[Dm]Even though I'm the [C/E]sacri[F]fice
[Gm]You won't [Bb]try for [C]me, not [Dm]now
Though I'd [C/E]die to [F]know you loved [Gm]me
I'm all a[Asus4]lone
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[Asus4]one missing me?
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb A7/C#]

[Dm]And if I [Am/C]bleed, I'll [Bb]bleed,
[Gm]Knowing you don't [Dm]care.
[Dm]And if I [Am/C]sleep just to [Bbsus2 Bb]dream of you
And [Gm]wake without you there,
[Bbsus2(-5) Bb]Isn't some[A7]thing...

[Dm]Even though I'm the [C/E]sacri[F]fice
[Gm]You won't [Bb]try for [C]me, not [Dm]now
Though I'd [C/E]die to [F]know you loved [Gm]me
I'm all a[Asus4]lone
[Bbsus2 Bb]Isn't some[Asus4]one missing me?

it may be about a parent, but it doesn't have to be.

Just out of curiosity, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in the second verse, isn't it "I breathe deep and cry out" instead of "Shudder deep and cry out"? At least, that's what it sounds like! Love this song though, very meaningful. Glad it was released on Anywhere But Home...

I think the meaning of this song is based around the need for some sort of recognition in a relationship. The author is giving out a cry for help to a lover/friend. Its about waking up to realise that the person you love may not love you. Even though you love them with all your heart they don't seem to notice anymore. The author has had enough and is leaving, but is hopeful that one day her lover will realise what they let go. But for now it is like he/she doesn't exist. Everything that they have given up for this person has been for nothing. I think in the end it is a song about the pain of loving someone so completely, yet not having the love returned.

Wow good views! Mine mostly matches up with xXBrokenXx. I picture a girl who walks away from her father and perhaps he is an alcoholic who is lost in the bottle, but it doesn't even have to be that. He just takes her for granted and doesn't pay attention to her. "Please, please forgive me, But I won't be home again. Maybe someday you'll have woke up, And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one: "Isn't something missing?"" She's saying you don't care about me. And maybe when you finally do start to care, it'll be too late. I'll be gone. I totally can relate to this song. Especially this part: "Even though I'd be sacrificed, You won't try for me, not now. Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone. Isn't someone missing me?" I used to when I was little think what it'd be like to be gone. Or to take myself out of this world. That if I could see everyone (perhaps through the eyes of my spirit) gathering around me and crying and realizing what a terrible mistake it was to lose me, I could find salvation in knowing that people actually appreciated and loved me. And it was never about just appreciation and love. It was about SHOWING appreciation and love. This world is cold, praiseless, and very needy. I think the "die to know you love me" is so powerful. This song blew me away when I first listened to it. Seems like I'll never get tired of Evanescence or Amy Lee's use of vocals. Some people venture to say that she simply has an operatic voice. But it's what she does with that already beautiful voice that amazes me. And on top of that she writes such dark and beautiful songs that really make you think. They really make you look around and realize that state of things. There seems to always be an underlying moral to each and every Evanescence song, but maybe that's just me. Amy Lee just has a way to write in such a manner that puts you right into that position that would lead you to understand the message. Gripping. Compelling. This song is no less. It's absolutely breathtaking.

i have to agree with thadius30 this is about realising that the person that you're in love with just doesn't care for you in even remotly the same way, i have a few friends who are in those relationships currently, it's rough to watch someone in that situation, and yet it is such a commen thing.... i think that "please please forgive me" line is kind of her wish that if she does leave he'll feel bad, but she knows he won't

First of all, it's "Even though I'm the sacrifice," not "Even though I'd be sacrificed." Also, it's "I don't want you to feel sad," not "I know what you do to yourself." And I agree with a lot of people: it's either about parents who don't care or a boyfriend who doesn't care. I wrote one story that the song described down to a g, about somebody sacrificing their life for the one they love-but that person doesn't love them, and they have to die knowing that no one will care. I love the lyrics, but I didn't like the song itself the first time I heard it. Now I love it.
