She cant move on, and lives in the past..dwelling on the memories that were once in her broken heart. She feels abandoned by her friends, even though they are there, yet shes alone in her mind, which makes her solitude very real. shes nothing without her other.

let me tell you something.... I love this song, and it is THE song for me right now, this period. I can relate to it, relate to it too much.....it's so sad. I hope no one I know reads this.... You see, there is this guy i love. he is such a winderful guy, so nice, and is true to himself. He is unlike any other guy in the world....he's my colleague. But he does not see me as anyone special, just as.........a colleague. And what is worse is...he loves someone who is close to me. More than close. He loves my elder sister. Imagine how it must feel. So I relate to the song so much, it makes me cry. "how many times have i done this to myself/ how long will it take before i see/ how long will this hole in my heart be mended/ Who now is left alone but me...." solitude...............

I love this song... im totally in love with evanescence... but i think this song is about a girl that loves a guy friend and wanted to tell him for so long and kept giving him hints btu he didnt get them and fell in love with another girl and totally crushed her. So she decided she'd be solitude or feels like she's alone and has no one.... and i think this might have happened to her a few times... i dont know maybe some friends abondoned her and she feels like he left her like so many other people... i dont know that's just my opinion and i love this band i love amy lees voice...

I agree mainly with sally cinnamon with one small difference. I think that she is in love with her friend and is his "secret admirer". Her friend goes on and on about how much he loves this secret admirer and how special and extraordinary she must be. This hurts Amy because she isn't all that extraordinary, she's just her. When she says: "Can't you see all along it was me? How can you be so blind as to see right through me? " She's clueless as to how he doesn't notice that it's her. She stays silent though because she's afraid of rejection. She asks "How long will it take before I see?" she's saying that somewhere in her heart she knows he doesn't love her but she keeps pretending because she still hopes that he might begin to love her. I dunno...That's just what I've thought it meant. It's a gorgeous song anyway and Amy really does sound heartbroken when she sings it.

This song is so beautiful. Its basically just loving someone so much and they dont return the feelings and you feel alone.

I agree with Sally Cinnamon and Kit-Kat. This song is about the whole" loving your best friends and they don't realize it" thing.
