This is possibly my favourite JF song. I have to agree with some of the comments that have been posted previously in relation to wanting to tell someone something but you never get around to it. I think John's exploration of this idea may be broader than just this. It seems to me that the main idea of the song is to send the message that some people try to be too perfect, i.e. perfectionists or even people who are obsessive-compulsive. The line "sometimes I have to get things right" comes to mind here. The line following this one, "I never meant what I said to you" might have something to do with him wanting to say something important, but then backing out by saying something unimportant. He also says, "I never say what I intend to". I think "A firm kick in the pants" is what you need so that you are reminded to say that important thing, rather than 'prettying up your speech' (i.e. just say whatever you need to say in its raw form).

I think it's about a relationship that went wrong, and for whatever reason, John has regrets about it, either because it's ended or because of something that happened in it. I think this is his way of dealing with the aftermath and saying that he didn't get to say the things he wanted to say, and even so, didn't know what him saying them would mean to the other person. I think there's stuff he would still like to say, but can't find the right way to do it. 1

probably my favorite line: "I never say what I intend to But does it mean that much to you" I think John fit a whole bunch of thoughts, feelings, and idea into this short quote. I felt like I understood what he was getting at with that; maybe its not complex and everyone understands what he's saying there - which is fine. Either way, I appreciate that it was in the song.

By the line, "I never say what I intend to But does it mean that much to you", I think John means that the person John is talking about in the song does not or cannot understand/appreciate what John "intends to say - but never does." I know the feeling of never telling someone what you intend to, perhaps because you're nervous or scared - but its the act of preparing to tell someone something and then eventually keeping it to yourself (I would think that most people have done this.) So I was saying above that I appreciate that John put that in the song because I think it literalized a strong feeling/idea that I know I've experienced.

well i thought it was pretty obvious. john has lost someone who he'd cared forbecause he screwed up something, perhaps something stupid, or it could've been just plain misunderstanding. anyway, that's what came to my mind after i've heard the song for the first time

it kind of shows his understanding of peole in a spirtual kind of way. i havent heard the song in ages as someone else has my cd but it could be that john has lost a part of himself and he dosent know how or why but feels something diffrent
