| i love the part when it says: "All of the things we want each other to be We never will be And that's wonderful, and that's life" it's an strong phrase the whole song is about trying, not giving up doesn't matter what could happen, because that's life about: you don't loose anything by trying to get what you want or who you love | |

| i think she's talking about she feels dissapointed maybe of life, because she thought life was different, people were different, but she realizes they're not, sometimes people can be hypocrite. "but the more I grow the less I know", i think she refers to the fact that as she's growing, she's getting more and more confused, so before she realized this, she had planned a type of life, but now she has to say it goodbye, maybe because it doesn't go with the real life, but in spite of this, she could find love in someone, so there's nothing left, but try and fight for it. x) | |

| An awesome song, my favorite the second I opened the album. I think she is confused as to what is going on in her relationship and this causes her to question things outside of the relationship - life and the realities of things... to her she is doing all she can - being herself. She realizes things just wont be the way they used to be, she can only be who she is and is 'trying' to make therelationship work out this way. Just one interpretation although i view the song in a few different ways. | |

| Eh, whatever Eatcarpet. If that's all you get out of the song, then perhaps you should stick to interpretting Paris Hilton tracks. IMO its about a character (perhaps Nelly herself, perhaps not) who is losing the idealism of youth and settling into the cynicism / pragmatism of adulthood ("All I know Is everything is not as it's sold / but the more I grow the less I know"). Its something that happens to most people as they leave their teens and early 20's and realize that they can't necessarily change the world as they had once thought, and that they have beomce a part of the very things they once railed against. But suddenly someone enters her life (I'm guessing a child ie. her daughter Nevis) and she discovers that there is a reason to to better. The line "Then I see you standing there / I'm all I'll ever be / But all I can do is try" suggests that she is picturing this child (as a baby, as a teenager, as an adult) looking at her and it makes her want to be a better person (ie. to "try"). And she is not so naive as to state that she "will" be a better person, but that she will try, and that is all she (and in fact any of us) can do. And there is a sense of acceptance of this fact, with the closing verse "All of the things we want each other to be / We never will be / And that's wonderful, and that's life". In other words, there are many things we may try at and fail at, and that is fine; "that's life". Just my take anyway. | |

| It sure could very well be about relationships especially the last few stanzas, but in the beginning I saw the song be applicable to the daily life way; of bumps and turns. To me, the singer is saying about her innocent naive perspective on life (everything including relationships of love or friendship) and that when she came into the world, it wasn't like what she had romanticized it to be. Sometimes things weren't what they seemed. No room for giving up, she tries. Then the last stanza is adversively directed to her "lover" and so forth. | |

| i absolutely love this song.. i think its about a girl who is in a relationship with a guy and she can't tell what he wants at all, sometimes he acts not into her and other times he acts like he can't live without her and shes driving herself crazy over it.. so she does everything she can to save their relationship, but no matter what she does it seems like it keeps worsening and "losing the magic" from what they had when they first met. as much as she'd like to leave the relationship.. she can't find it within herself to leave him. | |

| I think this song is about someone in a relationship and their partner wants too much from them. The more they try and do the more their partner wants and the harder they try to please. Just my thoughts :) | |

| i love this song. its sort of about wanting to be able to give yourself fully to someone but you can't at the time and you know its not fair on them. Its kinda like you've been hurt before and your not healed enough to trust completely in this person thus not able to give them all the love they deserve | |

| I'm kinda torn to the meaning of this song... the chorus seems to allude to some kind of barrier to the relationship. Perhaps one has a boyfriend/girlfriend while the other does not, or some other reason why they'd stand there wanting more from each other but unable to get it. But looking to the song as a whole I suppose you could say the main point she's trying to put across is that there aren't perfect relationships. What you think someone might be, is not what they are, but thats life. Dreams that you may have made for yourself from a relationship standpoint just aren't realistic, and though you can try, it'll never be that way. Yet despite all of its flaws it can still be love and be wonderful. Heh, I'm not quite sure if I'm on the right track, but that seems to be part of it. Just like any song, you can hold the intricasies of each song lyric in any viewpoint that can be applied to you. This seems to be what the song could mean to me, but seeing other people's own views on this song would be interesting. It's not an overtly easy song to pick apart, as it seems she's going in two different directions with the lyrics. Just my two cents I suppose. | |

| i think i can relate to it, well the chorus anyway. like he makes her want to be the best person she can be. because it's all she can give him, all he's asking her to do is try... i don't know. does that even make sense? good song... not something i would usually listen to but i like it. | |

| its about a couple who are in love but seem to be unhappy with each other, and both want the other to change, but the last verse sums everything up: we want to change each other, but its not gonna happen, but thats just the way it goes and we still love each other regardless | |

| I think that also, alluding from the video clip, it seems that she has been thrown into a life she finds it hard to handle. "then i see you standing there, wanting more from me, and all i can do is try" she's genuinely trying to please the guy she's been put into this trying situation with. she wantes to make him happy but she's finding her life difficult to control. (ps. just to make it clear, this is not an angst emo interpretation. i dont mean she's finding the whole journey of life too difficult to bear.) I like tot hink of this song as a young girl whose thrown away a wealthier life to be with the guy she's fallen in love with who is quite poor and now she's trying to adjust to a lesser life and still be happy witht he guy she loves and she's finding that they may have both made a mistake taking such a rash and romantic risk!! | |

| I think this song is about growing up, when you realise that life is not as beautiful as you thought, when you see how people can be awful, and you know that life will never be perfect like you wanted it to be. This happens to everyone, you know... And then, when you realise that everything you believed in is a big lie, just a fantasy, something that doesnt depend on you, you think you'll never be happy and you stop trying to be a better person. But, there is always someone, mother, brother, boyfriend, child, it doesnt matter who, who believes in you and who wants more from you because he knows you can do it... And you love that person so much that you try to be better so you can make him happy... And even though you know that you will never be perfect, you know you have to try, because that is the only thing you can do and that makes you a good person! | |

| This song (the message) is terribly dull and uninspired... The song is about keeping your feet on the ground and not expecting much out of life and/or relationships, and almost denying reality because it proves to be overwhelming. Eh? Not exactly an inspiring material. | |

| First of all, this is a beautiful song. I think it's about getting over it that no one's perfect, but if you love each other, you have to deal with that. You can't ask someone to change, because no matter how hard they'll try to be perfect for you, they'll stay who they are. You should love one another for who they are, not for who they're trying to be; | |

| I think username is on point. That last verse gets to me, it almost brings a tear to my eye when I hear it. It's one of those things you realize at a point when you have just grown up, it's kind of bittersweet. You know you've lost something, but you can't give up. | |

| This song shows us that things are not so esay and simple as they may look at first sight. About people's feelings hidden behind a mask "I wish I hadn't seen all of the realness And all the real people are really not real at all" I've heard once that dumb and careless people are much happier, because they don't understand the uglyness of the world and they don't even care about that. this song has a meaning in that way, too. | |

| This song clearly includes two different layers. At the beginning, the first 2 stanzas, Nelly is talking about how she has become wiser than when she was a kid and dreamed about how great life is in general. She now realizes that people can be fake and mean and "really not real at all". This knowledge confuses her ("the more I grow, the less I know"), she slowly loses the ability to deal with life ("the more I see, the less I grow"). As a conclusion she burries all the images she created as a kid ("say goodbye to the way of life...") for they are now useless to her. The chorus tells us another layer: The song has slowly turned into a description of a relationship. The first time she sings about him "wanting more" from her, we get the feeling she is sad about the situation, as she is unable to fulfill his wishes, she feels she is not enough for him. During the rest of the song, the mood clearly changes: The last part shows how she realizes she can try and try and she will never achieve whatever he wants from her, but this knowledge does not destroy her. In fact, it helps her recognize who she is and that they both are imperfect. During the climax of the music she finds relief, as she now knows they both will never be perfect, and that makes them beautiful together. In their relationship they can both be who they truly are: "All of the things we want each other to be, we never will be And that's wonderful, and that's life And that's you, baby,This is me, baby And we are, we are, we are, we are Free In our love" Amazing how wise Nelly sounds at such a young age. This song is ingenious. | |
