Subject: TAB: In Your Eyes (detailed)
In Your Eyes
============
by Peter Gabriel, from the 'So' album
This beautiful song from the 1986 'So' album is a classic. I have not
been able to find good sheet music for a guitar version of the tune, so
I did it myself. These simplified chords are not the ones David
Sanctious (Peter's keyboard player; sp?) plays, but they sound good
solo and with the record. Your comments, flames, etc. are invited. This
is my first TAB post so be kind :)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>o
Performace notes: Play with your fingers if you can; it makes the
arpeggios easier. Obviously, listen to the recorded version. The rythms
are fairly simple but some of the chord positions are, um, original.
The verses are best understood in phrases that last 8 counts as follows:
E A D G B e
chord 1 5 4 4 3 lasts 3 counts
chord 2 0 2 2 3 lasts 1 count
chord 3 2 0 0 3 lasts 3 counts
chord 4 0 x x 0 0 lasts 1 count
..repeat until chorus
Note: The intro is same as the verses but the very first bar omits chord
1.
======
Chorus :
======
The chorus has two melodic sections, a high one and a lower one which are
separated by a bridge.
First section (A major chord):
-----------------------------
Comes in with the lyrics "All my instincts.. they return..." etc.
pattern 1a: pattern 1b:
2nd finger bars 14th fret... 1st finger on 12th, 2nd bars G&B
e|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
B|------14-15-14---------15-14---14---|------14-15-14---------15-14---14-
--|
G|----14---------14---14------14---14-|----14---------14---14------14---1
4-|
D|--14-------------14-----------------|--12-------------12---------------
--|
A|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
E|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
(repeats serveral times)
Note to the digitally adventuresome: Patterns 1a & b can be played
with some
diffculty on the 9th & 10th frets using the high e string, but I
fould it
awkward to make pattern 1b work there.
Bridge:
vocals are the swelling "oooooooo--woh-woh" phrases
e|--------------------|
B|--------------------| (repeat 3-4x)
G|--7--6--5-----------|
D|--7--7--7-----------| recommend anchoring 3rd finger on 7th fret
A|--0--0--0-----------|
E|--------------------|
Second (main) section of chorus (E major chord):
(vocals are "In your eyes... the light... the heat..." etc.)
pattern 2a: pattern 2b:
2nd finger bars 14th fret... 1st finger on 12th, 2nd bars G&B
e|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
B|-------9-10--9---------10--9----9---|-------9-10--9---------10--9----9-
--|
G|-----9----------9----9-------9----9-|-----9----------9----9-------9----
9-|
D|---9--------------9-----------------|---7--------------7---------------
--|
A|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
E|------------------------------------|----------------------------------
--|
(repeats serveral times)
That's pretty much the whole song :-)
Other Versions
===============
Serveral Live versions of the song have an added
interlude during the 2nd part of the chorus where it gets quiet and
Peter does a vocal that goes (approx) "Accepting all I've done and
said/ I want to stand and stare again/ till there's nothing left out/
wo-wo-wo/ it remains there in your eyes/whatever comes and goes/wo-oh
its in your eyes" -> back to second part of chorus w/ full band. There
seem to be two quiet chords that alternate for this section as
follows:
(basically pattern 2 with added E on A string, 1st finger suggested.
E A D G B e
chord 1 7 9 9 9 lasts 8 counts
chord 2 7 7 9 10 lasts 8 counts
I have also heard this interlude used as an extended into/outro on the
recent live album recorded on the 'US' tour (Paula Cole singing backup.
She's great!)

This song has become too overplayed, and there are many different live and studio versions done of this song, but it's overplayed for a good reason: the lyrics and the song itself are both well-written as well as catchy. Actually I like the original "So" album version the best, although Peter Gabriel never fails to perform this song in a new, interesting way live every time.

This song is about someone whom is confessing thier love for someone else. They want to run and hide, but no matter what, fate keeps pulling them back to where they are now. A very beautiful love song indeed. The set of lyrics that go "And all my instincts, they return..." and so on, he's realizing that his facade of denial is fading and that there's no turning back, which means that he has to say what he feels...and by looking in the person's eyes, they feel as if, they're whole again. This is definitely a nice song to identify with.

This song gets me everytime I hear it...but everyone on here has been talking about the movie it's from... I've never seen it, so I think I just might have to rent it!

Gabriel does write metaphorically about God in his music--but I thought this was directed to the African man he sings with on the original version--that he covets the 'light and heat' he sees in his more 'spiritual' African friend, rather than the cold Christian facade that his homeland has become. So, I see it as a typical pendulum from dead Christianity, past the real live Church still existing, to the view of more 'primitive' societies being most pure and desirable.

You notice Peter Gabriel makes a lot of songs with spiritual meanings in them. For example he did the whole soundtrack to "Passion" a movie about Jesus. I'd say this song is about God and his love for him and how he struggles sometimes for that divine feeling.

I Can't Say Much That Somoe One Hasn't Said Already, But I Just Want To Say That This Is Me And My Girlfriends "Average" Song. We Have Two Songs Because We Couldn't Choose, So We Have An "Average" Song, And A "Personal" Song. But This Song Is Still AMAZING!!

This song is a really good song, i'm pretty sure its about his relationship with god. If you look at many of Peter gabriel's songs they deal with god indirectly. He doesnt just come out and say. I love you god, in your eyes or anything like that, but the songs are still about god. I dont think Peter is a labeled "christian singer" but he definately has some good songs that are most definately Christian songs. Although that may be the intended meaning for the songs, you can view the song in any way that suits you. For example what taschibandgirl says about confessing your love. It could be about confessing your love to another besides god. EIther way you see it or view it, it is an awesome song.

I had the same opinion of this song as TasChiBandGirl until I heard it performed along with the message at my church...(the cover band we have is awesome) I think that the interpretation I was presented with there makes just as much sense: the person is upset with life, wants to get away (drive off in my car) but eventually (come[s] back to the place you are) 'you' here meaning God and support. The person wants desperately to be a part of God, as their (instincts) indicate originally, but they can't handle everything that God has done for them-(I don't like to see so much pain ) and they find it hard to accept that. Eventually though, they feel complete and (look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive) The song makes a lot of sense this way, and it gives a more realistic view of Christianity, from the human perspective. [also, there's a typo...it 'working so hard for OUR survival']
