Ordinary Day
Great Big Sea
From the album "Play" c. 1997
Capo 1 (Key of F)
INTRO:
E Asus2 (2X)
E Asus2 E Asus2
I've got a smile on my face and four walls around me
E Asus2
I've got the sun in the sky and all these waters surround me
E B
Oh, Hey oh
E Asus2
Yeah, I'll win now but sometimes I'll lose,
E Asus2 B
I've been battered but I never bruise, it's not so bad...
(a capella)
And I say...
Chorus:
E Asus B
Way, hey, hey, it's just an ordinary day,
E Asus2 B
And it's all your state of mind.
E Asus2 B E
At the end of the day, you've just got to say it's alright.
E Asus2 E Asus2
Janie sings on the corner, what keeps her from dying?
E Asus2
Let them say what they want, she won't stop trying.
E B
Oh, hey oh.
E Asus2
She might stumble if they push her 'round
E Asus2 B
She might fall, but she'll never lie down, its not so bad...
And I said...
Chorus
E Asus2 E Asus2
In this beautiful life there is always some sorrow.
E Asus2
And it's a double edged knife, but there's always tomorrow.
E B
Oh, hey, oh.
E Asus2
It's up to you now if you sink or swim,
E Asus2 B
Keep the faith and your ship will come in, it's not so bad..
And I say...
Chorus. Finger accordian stuff. Chorus 2X
E Asus2 E
'Cause I've got a smile on my face and four walls around me.
A feel good Newfie song. You can play it in E without the capo and it sounds fine.
Feel free to take a swing at filling in a lead someplace...that's what Newfoundland
music is all about - improvising in the kitchen.
Chords:
E - 022100
Asus2 [Aadd9(no3)- no 3rd, but 2nd from AMaj triad] - 002200
B - 224442

| This song never fails to pull me out of a funk. It may take two or three plays, sometimes, but it works. Sometimes we all need to be reminded that things may look and feel bad, but it won't last forever. 1 | |

| This is such a great song. I wish this band was more popular because they are really desevring of success. This song really means a lot to me. It has help me get through some really tough times. Someone I love very much was murdered about a year ago and the lyrics: In this beautiful life there's always some sorrow And it's a double-edged knife, but there's always tomorrow Oh you know, It's up to you now if you sink or swim, Just keep the faith and you're ship will come in it's not so bad convey an attitude that I am struggling to maintain....but this song and others like it have really helped me. Music has an incredible healing power and GBS illustrate that. | |

| There are countless songs out there that can pick you up when you're feeling low... not a one of them comes close to this song. "There's always tomorrow... it's just an ordinary day." Today may seem like the worst day ever, but a different perspective will prove that life's not so bad. Tomorrow will be better, and life will go on. It's only sorrowful if you choose to dwell on it. This song is the perfect thing to keep you from doing so. | |

| I agree. I love it because it's so rare nowadays that we hear songs about having a positive attitude and keeping things in scope (though I'm sorry about that murder). We all get sooo worked up every day over so much stuff that's really just pointless in the big scheme of things. We should realize that it's just an ordinary day. | |

| I couldn't agree with you more - I play it around my friends all the time, hard-rock/metal fans, and they're like "Gah.." but eventually their feet are tapping. | |
