This is a basic tab template:

e|
B|
G|
D|
A|
E|

The string order goes from Highest to Lowest Pitch.
For Example:
e is the highest pitched String
E is the lowest pitched String

Many different symbols are used in Tabs to show different effects
These are them:

x = Mute String
/ = Slide
h = Hammer on
p = Pull off
~ = Let Ring
PM = Palm Mute

I bet you are wondering what they mean here is their explanations:

Mute String
After you have played the string just hold down where you Strum
the strings with a fleshy part of your hand so that no sound echoes.

Slide
After you have played a fret slide (up or down) to the fret after
the / or \ For Example is it sais 4/8 you play the 4th fret and
slide down to the 8th without playing the string again.

Hammer on
Hammer ons are the way to nail those really fast solos. After
you have played a fret quickly press down on another fret with
a higher fret number For Example 4h6 you would not be able to Hammer
on For Example 6h4.

Pull off
Pull offs are just like Hammer ons but the oposite in technique.
To play a pull of hold down 2 or 3, maybe even 4, frets on the same
string . Then play that string once and instead of pressing down
the Frets pull them off highest frets first. For Example 12p9
you cannot do this For Example 9p12.

Let Ring
This is not complicated. After you have played the note you like,
keep the frets held down for the duration you want the sound to
ring (you could even hold it till it mutes itself, thats good
for an outro).

Palm Mute
Palm Muting is used to obviously mute the sound but it a really
effective technique. When you are Strumming String place the
fleshy part of your hand (near the little finger) on the string
and press down onto your pick ups.

I hope this helps you to read Tab I know this would help me because
at first i thought e was E and B was A and so on.
Have Fun!
