BROKEN ANGEL
(I. Hanson, T. Hanson, Z. Hanson)
intro
C// CM7// Am//// Dm// Dm7// G////
(verse1)
C Am
So small, yet still so proud
Dm G
At night before he dreams he looks into the clouds
Em
A high flyer's what I want to be
F G
Seems they won't let me, says I'm too small
G7
I don't feel small at all
C Am
Break my dreams, that's what they'll do
Dm G
Well I'm going to run away and learn to fly like you
Am F G Em
I'm going to go so high and swoop so low
F G
You can't bring me down, going to be so proud
(chorus)
C Am
Little angel you got to learn to fly
Bb F
Get up and earn your wings tonight
C AM
Little angel just look in my eyes
Bb F
Get up and earn your wings tonight
(verse2 Same as 1st verse chords)
Push and shove then climb aboard
This is the shuttle train to the top of the world
When you look around what do you see
These are all high flyers
But none of these high flyers look like me
(play intro chord progression)
What is that supposed to mean
What am I supposed to be
(verse3 same chords as verse1 again but best played lightly and pickin strings)
I pull my way up through this crowd
To find your body crushed on the ground
It's so obvious, why couldn't you see
That you can't go high flying without a pair of high-flyer wings
(Verse 4 Play with feelin cmon its last verse hehe)
Little one's broken lying on the ground
Trying to get up 'till his last breath out
Wings are strune everywhere, there's blood all around
'Cause even angel's die, but that light just fades
It's so sad, but he'd be so proud
(chorus)
Broken angel you've got to learn to fly
Get up and earn your wings tonight
Broken angel just look in my eyes
Get up and earn you wings tonight
Get up and earn your wings, earn your wings tonight.

| I think there are a lot of ways to interpret this song. I like Shani's idea of the fact that it's about Zac's struggles as the youngest member of the band. But in a way I think it's not about that, because it's a totally sad failure. I think this song is about complete failure... maybe it's what they were thinking as Island rejected song after song? "Break my dreams, that's what they'll do..." I think that definitely fits. Obviously, Hanson felt that all the songs they recorded were good enough for an album, but time and time again Island crushed their dreams. | |

| I love how the lyrics keep changing point of views. Sometimes it's in third person then first person. I think that by doing that it shows that this song can relate to any human being who feels like they crash and burn. LIke Sincerity said ... failure but with a sense of being proud since that was one of the main lyrics in the song. | |

| I think that this is about having big aspirations and taking on more that you are really capable of and trying to acheive too much before you've put in the time and effort to prepare yourself, but still being proud because you tried to make your dreams come true. | |

| Zac said in one interview that it was about Taylor. He then took that comment back, but it stuck with me. Taylor went through a lot of crap in his life at the same time - marriage, leaving one label and starting his own, a baby, and a new record. That's a hell of a lot of stress for someone who was under 20 at the time. | |

| Zac wrote the song. I think, in general, that because he is the youngest, he is expressing how he tends to feel inferior sometimes. I mean, the poor kid has to fight for recognition and for people to take him seriously because their first record came out when he was 11. It's like half of the world doesn't realize that he's not 11 anymore. | |

| I totally agree with something_vague. i wrote a paper on the song my senior year and that is what makes the most sense to me. Them being young and not taken seriously by large labels. Although, The idea with Zac being the band's youngest member makes sense too, I somehow don't think they would put a song like that on the album. To make one seem less knowledgable or not taken seriously in the band. It doesn't make sense to me. | |

| To me, this song is, very simply, about failure. I don't think I need to explain too much further. *shrug* | |

| has anyone seen the movie 'Hardball' about the young black baseball team.. with G Baby.. This little angel reminds me of him... he dies proud just like the little angel because he just won the big game.. after all the sitting back and watching all the big kid (aka the high flyer in the song) finally he got to fly with them.. | |

| i totally agree with the whole failiure and just you have to live to let go and just learn your lesson and "earn your wings" and just there are always going to be people who "break your dreams" but you just have to live it | |

| Something about this song makes me think of being held back, either by yourself or by someone else, and having no one but yourself to overcome it. But in the end, he takes a chance, but it doesn't work and he ends up not making it. That's just my take on it, though. 1 | |

| I don't think that Zac wrote the song about himself. Why? Because noone would think of themself as being an angel (as in: you are such an angel) and therefore hardly noone would compare themself to an angel. This might be far out but I can't help noticing two things that both point in the same direction: The first thing is that the broken angel is a "he". Usually when you think of an angel you think of it as being female just like you think of God as being male. Why write about a male being something that people would normally think of as female? The second thing is that the broken angel is "going to be so proud" and "he'd be so proud". Why "proud"? Why not "free", "cool" or something completely different? Could these lyrics be about a closeted gay guy? This would explain "Seems they won't let me" and "Break my dreams, that's what they'll do". Perhaps they are not. But it is clearly about somthing that is confusing to the broken angel: "What am I supposed to be?" Guess we will never know unless Zac gives us a few more pointers. | |
