I agree...anyone who has ever been depressed, I mean truly depressed, knows what this song is about and it'll really hit you. I went through several years of depression because of something that happened to me as a child and everytime I hear this song, I get teary-eyed, because I can completely relate...as can many people out there. It's an amazing song and currently my favorite by them.

Dude... if you know Hanson at all you know why they wrote this song. All the crap they went through when they were with Island Def Jam (record label) and the stress they went through. I can't wait until the "Strong Enough to Break" documentary comes out. But this is one of my all time fav. Hanson songs, Taylor is AMAZING on vocals, i wish Tay would have sang it at the concerts i went to :(

i can laugh all i want. i get that it's about depression, but i think it does a very disappointing job of being articulate about it. i think that "birds in the trees just make me depressed / seeing sunny skies, feeling emptiness" sounds horribly stupid, as do the generic line "but this bird was meant to fly away." i love the melody of the song, and i adore hanson, but i am allowed to laugh at them when they write such weak lyrics.

I think this song is more about being the only person to believe in something - an idea, a goal, a person. I think this is the struggle people in a depressed state go through - "There has to be someone else out there that feels the way I do" kinda thing.

I think maybe this is about all the fakeness of the lives they lead. There's definitely the REAL people, and then there's the persona they present to the public. Maybe they're tired of living that lie. Maybe they want to believe that there's more out there, or maybe that there's someone to see through the lie.

it sounds like he finds faith? ("I was holding on, now I'm letting go This is nothing more than a picture show") maybe life is fake and he feels enlightened past possesions ("Busy keeping less, never getting more","This kind of life I can't afford") and now he's scared and doubting the importance of this life ("Everything I knew, now I hardly know","This kind of life is all I know") he's seeing through the ("Layers of lies"),and then is ("feeling emptiness") and perhaps becoming moral before finding his next life. ("Sorry I can't seem to stay But this bird was meant to fly away, fly away"), last line ("I CAN'T believe in nothing")

some how i strongly doubt that this is one of hansons worse songs lyrically like made out, as a matter of fact its probably one of very few that is good. this line that people here finds 'stupid' is just suppose to show how lifes beautys no longer mean anything to him.. i realize it rhymes but your not fully analyzing instead your nit picking.

This song is about someone who just can't take it anymore, but they don't want to give up. They're thinking of alternative ways out (murder wears a friendly smile, like a perfect end in a plastic vile...) but there's still something worth holding onto for them, and they want to be able to believe in that, they're not ready to give up. Another interpretation of this song is that it can be about abortion, once again going to the murder wears a friendly smile part, that would be the easiest way out of a pregnancy that you don't want anyone to know about.

Oh, by the way, just because you write a song about depression, doesn't mean you have to BE depressed. People write songs about people they know too...not just their own experiences. A lot of people can relate to this song and they knew their fans could and maybe, just maybe, it could help someone. I know it's helped me. 1

This song is beautiful. I agree that if you have never looked depression in the eye then you will not relate to this song as strongly. To the person who said "what do Hanson have to be depressed about" All i can say is . *shakes head* you have no idea. x

I've never laughed at this song. If you've ever been depressed you know exactly what this song is all about. Sometimes even the little things can't move you anymore and you feel like nothing means anything anymore and you just wish you could believe in something. I can't imagine laughing at it... I love Taylor's vocals on this one.

i agree with letters to noelle, if you have never been depressed before you would not understand the meaning of the song. letters to noelle stated sometimes even the little things cant move you anymore hense birds in the trees just make me depressed, i think that line is one of the best lines on the cd including "throw me a line so i can anchor my pain" and "this wrecking ball your holding could crush the heart you've stolen" the song is beautiful and way taylor sings it only adds to the songs beauty.

Okay, I must admit. The first time I heard this song, I laughed. I couldn't help it. They were doing alright until the line "Birds in the trees just make me depressed." I couldn't take it seriously for the life of me. Then, I lost my boyfriend of three years, and suddenly I understood just what it was like to long for something to believe in and I couldn't laugh anymore. :P

I wonder why Hanson wrote this song in the first place?? What to they have to be depressed about that would make them feel this way anyway? I think its a sad song but I love it and its one of my favorites on the new cd.
