albertiusmaximus Im not trying to be a dick or anything, but with Manic Depression or Bipolar Depression, your not always going up and down. You will have an "up" period where your aboslutely Euphoric and optimistic, and for proper Manic Depression you will stay in that state for a few days, and then sink into the depression which will last a few days, and then you may not have an attack for a while. As I said Im not trying to be a prat and be really picky about what you said. Just wanted to clear it up a bit just in case anybody went away thinking it manic is just when someone is going up and down all the time. Hope you dont take offence at that 1 2 3 Next

I think this song is about when you start a relationship and your confused and your emotions start "fighting". Each of those feelings are described as colors.

Atemporal, that's exactly the question that we cannot answer. He talks about his colors as if they were emotions, I think. So if we go with that, his colors are bold or strong, etc, so being bold as love...?

It's about how he see's all people as "rainbows", each colour represnting different emotions. And he most likey reached this point of view through alternit perceptions.

albetiusmaximus, u know ur shit and ur dead on. also i beleive wilcos thing about the colours...thats just pure genius as far as songwriting goes, now we see why hendrix was such a dylan fan. and my comment on acid....if this is the kinda stuff that comes as a result of it, who cares? you dont have to do it but i dont think that there is much denying that drugs especially LSD puts your creativity into overdrive. hendrix is a prime example, pink floyd as another.

Jimi saw his music as colors, and he played the colors he saw in his head. I think that's what the song is referring to. Also, johnnyGlaze, quit being a tool, Hendrix was a hippie.Bodester, most people do not get fucked up for life due to acid, only people who take waaaaaaay to much, or people that already have physcological problems.

yea you do, acid mixes up your 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste,) so that instead of hearing sounds you see sounds or taste sounds and when you look at things you hear them or taste them instead of seeing them.......this song is awsome and so is jimi

That's only one of the effects, and only happens to some people, some times. Another is that your brain gets fucked up for life. That's a lot more common. This is one of my favorite Hendrix songs. I think the red + "ribbons of euphoria" might be talking about "reds" or barbituates. However, it's a great riff on that part. I read somewhere that Jimi Hendrix had a fantasy about the axis of the world changing, and changing all life eternally, so that might be the "axis". I don't know how much of that is fiction, but it's an interesting thing to add to your perspective on this song.

Ok i think i get it now. By encompassing himself as a rainbow and(aside from other references to the queen's gown and blue oceans) describing each color as a different emotional state that is bold in it's own right, i think he's describing love as a rainbow through metaphor. He uses a vast range of colors to describe himself as confident, daring, unsteady and not so mellow. When you're in love you can feel a lot of things like this, sometimes all at once and it confuses the shit out of you. So in a way all his colors are confusing him and holding him back from this girl he's talking about. He even follows the color spectrum ROYGBIV but he starts in the middle. Often times true love waits(yea radiohead) and no one gets what they want right away. Both people have to give up certain things, games that they're playing etc; and meet themselves halfway, in the middle, and fall mutually in love(good luck).

I wonder if the rainbow is him, because the lyrics suggest that, except "And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from, uh, Giving my life to a rainbow like you". I think this part is probably referring to some beautiful aspect of the girl, because otherwise it would make the whole song almost impossible to interpret. the color order I see is : Violet, Green, Blue, Indigo, Red, Orange, Yellow. So violet is out of place. Almost makes me wonder if this is the girl's name or something related to the girl, but it's probably just to get it to flow.

Any experience changes you for life, and I'd argue that an acid trip isn't a positive one, even if it feels good, or makes you think you've gained some insight. It is however a profound experience, obviously (not talking from personal exp. here, don't dis me for it.) So it changes you for good negatively. P.S. I wrote that other post a while ago, before I started researching online accounts of acid et al. I probably wouldn't have said the same thing now. However, Jimi did take wayyyy too much, and had psychological problems...so...yeah. Good point. =P

Jimi Hendrix was a genius. Like many other people who have reached those heights, he suffered with depression, or in his case, manic depression. Manic depression is much more of an emotional roller-coaster than straight depression, because depressives feel bad all the time, whereas manic depressives can feel good one day, bad the next and so on. To keep experiencing highs and lows is VERY draining, and at times you just need an escape. Jimi found acid to be this escape, because, let's face it, when you're shitfaced you really don't feel, you don't care, all your troubles seem to vanish. What could possibly brighten your world more than seeing pretty colours, visions, hearing sounds that don't exist in your 'normality'? Jimi's depression was also fuelled by the frustration he felt at not being able to reproduce the sounds and notes he held in his mind with his guitar. Why do you think he was so experimental and hence, such a guitar pioneer? Would he have reached such an advanced state if he hadn't been trying so hard to play what he was thinking? Add some acid to the mix and you end up with songs like 'Bold As Love'. The colours, the inventiveness, the genius...
