Ok, I made this tab, because someone who has acoustic guitar, and can?t play Hey Joe solo with it, can
play the same solo, just another position.
But anyway, here it is:
Whole song goes like: C G D A E (I think so), and the solo goes in Em blues (I think so)
solo:
e-----------0--------------------------------0---------------------------------------------------------|
B--3/5---------3--0------------------3/5--------3--0--------------------------------------------0------|
G---------------------2/4-----0-----------------------2/4--4--2--0--2--0----0-----0-------------0------|
D--------------------------2---------------------------------------------2-----2----------0--2-----2---|

B--3/5--3/5----0--3--0-------0--3--0--------------------------0---------------------3------------------|
G-----------------------2/4-----------2/4--------2--0----2/4-------------------2/4--------2/4--2--0----|

e---------------------------------------------------|
B-------------0-------------------------------------|
G-------------0-------------------------------------|
D-------0--2-----2----------------------------------|

end riff:

| No metaphors i've heard so far make any sense. Especiallly since it was written before the war. Anyone who thinks this is about vietnam is completely delusional and should shut up. If 'I shot my old lady' means shooting down an idea, or going to war then you can interpret it to mean absolutely anything you want because that makes no freakin sense. | |

| This song is really has nice blues dark kind of vibe to it. Going down to businessthough, I believe this song is bout a protest of the war. "I shot my old lady"....I guess this could mean that he in a way, shot the whole idea down. Going to a war with no meaning what so ever to yourself is a bitch....kind of like an old lady, hence the lyric.."shot my old lady." Also, since this is America.."no hangman will pput a rope around me."....he can't get into any trouble on account of free speech.. The part when he say he's going down to Mexico, he's obviously trying to escape the draft. That's what the song means to me. ~GrUnGe_GuY~ | |

| I thinks this song is about a guy named Joe whom wants a better life for himself and his family, (his wife) and he wants to teach her a lesson, as he should because she is a tramp skank who need's a beatin' and a killin' as any bitch who cheats should. He shoulda boiled her, but poor Joe isn't smart enough, hence the repeating of the lines in the song. | |

| although not directly apparent to the intellectually opaque, this song is about GI JOE in vietnam. there are several anti-war overtones that are startling and bombastic. joe is going to go and shoot an old lady, in other words, the US is fighting communism. but jimi asks: why bother? | |

| i believe communists would say the opposite, after all karl marx said that all capitalist countries would eventually fall and become communist. because there are like 4 stages - feudalism, then capitalism, then socialism then communism, but we're just not ready for communism yet .. *shrugs* i'm not a marxist, just pointing it out. the revolution in russia was spontanious, which is why america were so worried about communism - if it could happen so spontaniuously in russia what was stopping it from happening in the USA? that's what mc carthys feared anyhow... well.. obviously not just mc carthy, he was just famous for it | |

| No actually I think it is a cover. Possibly from the 50's, but I'm not sure. I also think that many artists did it before Jimi so I would guess it's fairly old because one song doesn't get covered 5 times in 5 years. That Vietnam explanation does seem to fit well though. You can read more about the song in the book that comes with the "Ultimate Experience" album. | |

| please no vietnam. two reason: 1. not every song written in the sisties is about vietnam. why can't a song be a normal song without any hidden meaning? 2. hendrix didn't write this song. the copyrights of this song are owned by Billy Roberts (never heard) who seemed to write this song in 1962. (check http://www.heyjoe.org/lyrics.html) however, if this is true, we must recognize the great contribution of Hendrix. surely the arrangement of this song (as in other covers he did) is extraordinary. i don't think the original version (or any other cover) are better than hendrix one. so i consider Jimi Hendrix as the King Mida of Rock and Guitar. | |

| I agree. What kinda of tramp would cheat on her man like that? She should be slaughtered. Joe has a great life going for him, and when he gets the chance to get revenge, I think the song picks up, and is more happy and cheerful. I think that is what the point is. Women need to pay respect, and when they don't, its fun to kill them. | |

| Well, the revolution in Russian wasn't exactly spontaneous. There were plent of political agitators etc. GI Joe makes some sense, but to use the words of Highway Child, "I think it goes a little deeper than that." Although a lot of stuff in the 60's was about Vietnam, since most of the songwriters were liberals, since most of them dropped plent of acid. I think the part about dodging into Mexico for the draft makes sense. However, I think it's a mix of Nam sentiment and plain old classic "bitch cheated i'ma kill her now ok bye bye"...etc...lol. What ~does~ it mean to you bongo? | |

| This is not about Vietnam....it was an old blues song, remade by Hendrix and countless others. Matter of fact, a group called "The Leaves" released a version of it about 6 months before the Jimi Hendrix Experience did. It is a typical story-telling old blues song. It is very literal....a guy kills his wife beause he caught her cheating on him and is running from the law. | |
