between the second and third verse he says "That's alright I still got my guitar Look out now." Jimi was awesome at blues and I wish he had done more. Jimi Hendrix ROCKS!!!

Hendrix was probably a better blues player than he was a rock and roll player. I have 2 of his blues cds and they are mind blowing. I don't know many blues players, but of the handfull i know he is the best by far.

I don't think that there is any kind of deeper meaning to the song. I think that this was just a straight up blues song and that the focus was really the guitar playing as opposed to some sort of hidden message in the lyrics. And btw, "Texas Flood" was a cover. It was originally written by a guy named L.C. Davis, I believe. You could definitely say that the guitar playing might be an interpretation of "Red House." Hendrix was a huge influence on SRV.

First off Texas Flood is not a derivation of Red House. Most blues songs have the same basic chord pattern and a rhythm that can be a shuffle, boogie woogie, etc. Red House and Texas Flood are both I-IV-V blues progressions which means you play the I IV and V chord which in the key of E would be E A and B. You can play a I-IV-V in any key you wish to. SRV played Texas Flood in G, which means the chords are G C D. In Red House the chords are B E G. These two songs are also 12 bar blues which means this: you typically play the first chord for for 4 bars, the second for 4 bars, and the third one 4 bars. Texas Flood is also 12 bar. That's why you get the same vibe out of both songs and they sound similar. Get in to blues real big and you will see most of them sound similar, differentiated mainly by the vocals and the individual player's licks. Anyway, the song is about Jimi's girlfriend Betty Jean and how when he came back from the Army she didn't live there anymore. The song strays from reality in the fact that he wasn't blue over her as he didn't want her anymore, and she didn't live in a red house, she lived in a brown house. Red House was one of the first songs Jimi wrote but even then he knew that a song about a red house would sound better and be more popular than brown.

I think you greatly over-analyse the song Floaton33. While Jimi did often romanticise about his mother, but this song is just straight up blues.

This song is about his long time girlfriend- betty Jean, he wrote it about her when he was in the army, its talkign about him being gone for so long and when he comes back she isn't around anymore. he talks about still having his guitar which he named betty jean, so even if he doesn't have her he has his guitar, his true love. he's also so been on the road, making music so him comming back to a different lock is like he doesn't fit in anymore. he's changed. he said that his baby dosen't live there anymore, i think thats like his desires have changed, this isnt where he'll find what he's looking for

perhaps this is a song about some guy being in jail and when he is released he returns home but only to find that his key wont open the door to his house and he thinks that his girlfriend wife or whatever just left.....

I think floatOn33 is wrong. This song is definately not about his mother. Who the hell calls their own mom "baby"? Its so obvious that the "baby" here refers to his girlfriend. Gage1 is right. This song is about some guy who went to jail for a 100 days for some petty offense and took half a day before he reached his old house where he used to live with his gf before his ass got thrown in jail (hence, the "99 and one half days" line.) Turns out, his girl has left him and some one else has moved in (hence, the "wait a minute, somethings wrong, the key would unlock this door." lyric. Usually, the locks are changed when new owners move into a house.) "But that's alright, I've got my guitar, look out now" represents the optimism of the guy. And the ending, "'cause if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will" is typical of a blues man, who, by stereotype, is always looking to "score" with chicks. Love this song. One of the best blues songs ever, making references to everyday life of the blues man (like Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King). Hendrix is God.

While Jimi never found the mainstream "black" audience...this was an attempt. Its a mainstream blues number that many of the black audience could relate to at the time. This song failed to touch many in that mainstream sound like Smokey Robinson, Tyrone Davis, BB King, Bobby Blue Bland, and other blues artists. Jimi just could fit his style in. Best guitar solo you will ever hear from Jimi and you won't hear Jimi say "yonder" in other songs as many as this one. Truly a country blues. Great song and great sound.

Ummm maybe this is about his mother. His false hope that she was a good mother showed what he thinks might have happened. She had to go away for a reason he didnt know, and when she returned he didnt live there(he lived with his father then after he came back from WWII and after she "left" him with his relitives) And she figures he doesnt love her, so he went and looked for his sister. Sry if i pissed n e 1 off with that i have no idea if he had a sister or not. Dont get mad at me plz. (oh and seriously theres no reason to use "fucking greatest guitar solo of all time") FUck is a word used way to often and is pretty pointlsess in my opion.) my ramblings are over, thanx 4 ur time

Ok, the fucking greatest guitar solo of all time. Shame I never heard this song untill recently. It blew me away. The song itself may not be the greatest, but the guitar more than makes up for it. Though I'm not certain, I am willing to bet that "Texas Floods" by Stevie Ray Vaugun is an interpretation of this song.
