----------------------------------------------------------------

JIMI HENDRIX - THE WIND CRIES MARY. Released as a single with
HIGHWAY CHILE as the B side on 12th May 1967.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Tabbed by:PJVillanueva

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary

The traffic lights, they turn, uh, blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags down stream
’cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary

Uh-will the wind ever remember
The names it has blow in the past?
And with this crutch, it’s old age, and it’s wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

Remember that you must tune your guitar a half step
down to match many of Jimi's recordings. This is
one of them.

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Balcony/5802/jimisdeath.htm go to this website, it's pretty cool. it talks about jimi's death and how he wrote a song 5 years earlier predicting his own death, and it was accurate. he also predicted that he would go down in history and never be forgoten. He's not gone, He's just dead!

Wow. Is this song not the perfect example of a rock ballad? He was truly a master of musical flavors.

Anyone else think that maybe this song is about some kind of parade that just took place and then smoking a bunch of mary-jane, or marijuana, after it. Or even smoking marijuana and then thinking about a parade? It makes sense, even if he wrote it after getting into a fight with his girlfriend. 1 2 Next

'After all the jacks are in their boxes and the clowns have all gone to bed ' refers to the testcard that used to appear on british tv late at night once broadcasting had finished, hence the going to bed thing. it was a still image of a girl holding a jack in the box and a wierdass clown thing next to her

Must have been the very first song that got me hooked on Hendrix. My good old dad started to play it on the CD and I asked him who it was. After that it was like stuck in my head.

yeah like every one else says this song is completely about the level of sorrow that comes with breaking up with a love one. he say "after all the jacks are in their boxes and the clowns have all gone to bead" i think it means that after the beuty of a relationship is gone, you understand things better, because he says you can HEAR happiness staggering down the street, not see. so after the illusion of happiness is gone, you can experience the death of happiness(foot prins dressed in read) the king and quenn lyrics simply refers to something missing something which is necessary for it to live. think about it, a qheen isn't a queen without a king, and a king isn't a king without a queen. they're sad because they're both incomplete. if you notice the lyrice go from whisper, to cry, to scream, and then back to cry. the tension builds up after the reality of the situation starts to hit jimi as he sings it, but it dies off as he learns to cope. The song is about breaking up basically, but it sounds great on a straticastor! hope this helps guys.

"The tiny island sags downstream" is probably that deflated sadness of loss and also that erogenous zone. He is not feeling very potent, at this time. A very sensitive metaphor. Happyness staggers- drunk? Footsteps dressed in Red- No happyness is not drunk its stabbed and bleeding and thats why it staggers. This is particular because Red shoes are typically womens and happyness has been killed from loss of a woman. This guy is a total poet genius. The solo is great a sad lullaby but unmistakably hendrix.

Jimi wrote it after a big row with his girlfriend Kathy.... they recorded it right after fire was recorded and they had 20 minutes left. He did dub after dub, what you are actually hearing is a mix of about 20 different dubs, of jimi playing "between" the notes.
