@SONG: * LOOK AWAY
(tabbed by randell@heinous.music.uiowa.edu
and Paul Hutchinson )

(riff-see tab)
Saw her standing there
Tears upon her cheeks told me something was wrong
I asked her what it was
She looked away and said, "My daddy's home"

(riff)
I knew what that meant
It meant that I can never see you again
I had seen this once before
I didn't wanna deal with it anymore

G Em
"Look away", she said
D D/F# G
As she turned a-way from me
Em
And I tried to hold her
D D/F# G
Couldn't let her be
Em D D/F#
Let her be, let her be

(riff)
I said "Why,
Why do you make me cry"
She said, "I love you so
Look away, I don't wanna know"

(riff)
I saw her standing there
Tears upon her cheek told me something's wrong
I said, "What baby"
She looked away and said, "My daddy's home"

"Look away", she said
As she turned away
My God, I know I loved her, couldn't let her be
Let her be, let her be

(riff)
Look away
Look away
She said, "I love you so
Look away"

In the case of this song, yes, it was probably a racial thing. However, it has wider applications than that. This song is about forbidden love of all kinds. It's about anyone who's ever loved anyone whose parents tried to get in the way of the relationship. It's about any love that was ever seen as "different" and that, if stuck with, could be dangerous for everyone involved. The relationship here is the anantithesis of hatred, but it clearly demonstrates the power and the reach of violent hatred. It's a horribly depressing song. I listened to it for a week straight and never got sick of it.

This song is about sacrifice. She's sacrificing her happiness for his sake. It seems to suggest she believes something terrible will happen if they stay together. nopt only to here, though. to him especially.

I think it's a racial thing. The dad doesn't want her dating a black guy. Of course he has "seen this once before" because he's always been black. Also, "Look Away" evokes the chorus of "Dixie."
